I took some notes from hotel groups like Aman Resorts and Four Seasons, as well as boutique hotels like Camellas-Lloret and well-run Airbnbs. What made their space stand out? Why did I feel like I was in another room? Here’s what I found – it’s the culmination of all the little details. Yes, the overall design matters, but the little things count too. It all adds up to an experience worth talking about.
It’s one of the first experiences you connect with emotionally when you stay somewhere. How did it smell? This can be a good thing or a bad thing. It can be neutral or one of those scents that last a lifetime. Fragrance is very important in the home.
Do you have pets? Consider an air purifier. Do you like more neutral scents? Use unscented cleaning products. For me, I love a strong candle – one that brings my space together. One thing that always stands out about a hotel room is the lack of “stuff”. I tend to over-decorate (eg desk tops with too many books). The beauty and tranquility of a space often lies in what is not there, not in what is.
Clearing up space is huge for changing the atmosphere. I’m a fan of Marie Kondo, her book “The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up” is a great read on how to organize a space.
A carafe of water at the table, a simple coffee machine for the morning, all this reminds me of a hotel room. I love the Nespresso machine because it means I can get a quick cup like when I travel. Or a carafe of water with a glass by the bed, just like in a hotel room. I even picked up a cheap suitcase rack to help pack/use for guests who visit.
I find that the hotel rooms I adore the most, such as Aman Resorts, are always warm and inviting. There are no pops of red and yellow, it’s all bone, white, beige and accents. There’s something very comforting about it for me – again, it’s a personal taste. I tend to stay in hotels that have a very natural color palette, as I am drawn to that.

You know, clean the bathtub, toilet, table top, door handles, etc. You don’t have to come home and fight some unnamed illness for weeks (see number one above).
There are just some things I don’t trust cleaning. You know, I once saw a dear lady cleaning a hotel room and the glasses they offered for drinking water, well, they just rinsed them with water and wiped them with a towel (that was used on other surfaces) – YUCK!

There is often a coin-operated washing machine and dryer right on the premises. Kids (and adults) can go through clothes pretty quickly due to car sickness or spills on the road.
This will save you from the temptation to raid the hotel ice maker and refill the cooler (which you will need, trust me!).
Believe it or not, a giant bin of legos is all the toys you need. When there isn’t much to distract the group, this can do the trick! Older children also get into the mix. (We’ve never worried about small children with small parts because there are plenty of eagle eyes watching over them.)
Twisted crayons and mechanical pencils are recommended (no sharpeners required). Most of the time, my kids aren’t very excited about coloring books, so blank paper is best for us (I cut the sheets into quarters and staple them together to make mini notebooks).
