Amsterdam, Netherlands – Europe’s first big New Year’s Eve was in Amsterdam. It started off slow but got wild after midnight. I wouldn’t spend New Years there again, I feel too old for that kind of fun now, but it was a lot of fun back then. Amsterdam is a compact city, so if you can find a rooftop terrace or a high place, you can see fireworks all over the city. Watch the official city fireworks at Kop van Java, otherwise head to Nieuwmarkt or Dam Square to party with the crowds.
Lisbon, Portugal – Lisbon is one of Europe’s most beautiful coastal cities and has a good chance of relatively warm (ish) weather. Bairro Alto is the place to be after midnight, when the quiet residential area turns into an all-night party zone. The bars are packed with most of the people who come out to the narrow streets, even in winter. If you prefer something a little different and very Portuguese, head to the Alfama district for a night of Fado singing.
Budapest, Hungary – Budapest is a year-round entertainment destination. When I lived there, weekends were full of partygoers drinking cheap drinks in one of the city’s many rundown bars. It’s easy to catch bar-hopping in Budapest, and New Year’s will be the same. Barcelona, Spain – Another popular nightclub hotspot in Europe, Barcelona has a well-deserved reputation for entertainment. Start the evening with a set menu while drinking plenty of local cava (sparkling wine) at one of Barcelona’s best restaurants. After the party, escape the touristy Les Ramblas area and head to the Gothic Quarter, El Born or Ravel. Hamburg, Germany – Hamburg is another great party city in Europe, albeit a bit more subdued and cultured than Budapest or Barcelona. Except Reeperbahn, which is considered the longest amusement street in Europe. It’s usually pretty full, but it gets crazy on New Year’s Eve. For a slightly less chaotic night (slightly), watch the fireworks from the shores of the Alster lakes or on the Landungsbrucken overlooking the Elbe River. There are some weird New Year’s traditions in Hamburg that you should watch out for.

Ljubljana, Slovenia – Ljubljana’s Metelkova is the city’s hipster district and where you’ll find the best nightlife if you’re under 25. But if you’re too old for this scene, it’s lined with the river Ljubljana in the old town. cool bars and chilled locals. It’s pretty easy to celebrate New Years in this part of town, and if you don’t feel like partying or drinking, there are plenty of restaurants here too.
Tirana, Albania – New Year’s is big in Albania, but it’s more of a family event than a big drinking and partying event. However, Tirana’s nightlife district, Blloku, is always a great party all night long. I don’t recommend staying at Blloku unless you seriously want to never sleep, for example, as the music never stops. Stockholm, Sweden – I haven’t spent New Year’s Eve in Stockholm, but I’ve heard great things. The traditional New Year’s celebration is held at the Skansen open-air museum on the island of Djurgarden. This is also the place to watch the midnight fireworks. If that doesn’t sound appealing, Stockholm is a great city with great museums and cafes to experience the Swedish fika tradition.

Hallstatt, Austria – A picturesque lakeside town not far from Salzburg. There isn’t much to do other than sit by the lake and take in the views.
Cesky Krumlov, Czech Republic – The magical town of Cesky Krumlov near Prague is gorgeous and one of the best places in the Czech Republic for foodies.
Assisi, Italy – One of the most breathtaking medieval towns in the Umbria region of central Italy. Again, quiet and the food is incredible.

Niagara Falls came up in conversation, but when we looked at hotels in the city, we were looking at $300-$800 a night for a room. Since we didn’t want to fly from Toronto to Niagara Falls and back overnight, our first hurdle was finding a hotel that wouldn’t break the bank two days before New Year’s Eve. It won’t be convenient to find a hotel on the strip, so I looked at the neighboring areas on the Choice Hotels website.
Last Minute New Year’s Trip Ideas
Just two days before New Year’s Eve I found a Comfort hotel in Welland Ontario for $99 a night. I love these hotels because they offer clean, comfortable rooms, free wifi, and free breakfast. Between Toronto and Niagara Falls, there are a few that break the long drive home after midnight.
According to google maps it would only take 20-25 minutes to get to the falls from the hotel in Welland. Between the two of us, we were looking at $55 for the hotel, $10 for parking, and about $10 for gas, and spent New Year’s Eve in Niagara Falls for under $100 each.
We arrived at Niagara Falls at 5:30pm, which I later learned was very fortunate as the nightfall made traffic impossible for the city.
