A ‘Masseria’ is a former farmhouse that was part of a 16th or 17th century complex in the Puglia region of Italy and is increasingly being converted into hotels and guesthouses. Set on five acres in the Salento countryside, this villa is a magnificent 17th-century residence and is the site of Baglioni’s latest estate, although it differs in size and style from other very different properties. There are just 40 rooms here, located in former stables and barns, arranged around a central courtyard. Each room has vaulted ceilings and whitewashed limestone elements, most have outdoor terraces, and all are decorated in soothing neutral colors. This legendary estate was designed by French architect Jacques Couëlle, who never met a curve he didn’t like and created dramatic cave-like interiors here. Four years ago, Bruno Moinard and Claire Bétaille were tasked with reviving arcades, arches, buttresses, hidden stairs, unexpected benches and irregular layouts, allowing “this living organism to breathe again”. These restaurants are led by chefs with multiple Michelin stars: Mauro Colagreco at Mirazur, Jean-Georges Vongerichten whose empire shows no signs of stopping, and Hiro Sato at the famous six-seater sushi bar Hakkoku.
A historic villa built in 1787 by Count Andrea Lucini Passalacqua, with interiors by renowned Swiss designer Giocando Albertolli, has become Passalacqua, a stunning old-world boutique hotel with 24 luxurious suites, owned by the DeSantis family of the equally legendary Grand Hotel but Larger.
