With so many amazing and unusual historical sites built by ancient civilizations, it can sometimes be difficult to narrow down the best. Think of all the lists of historical wonders out there and how different they are.

Everyone has their own criteria for what makes a good or bad historical place — including me. I am not only a history buff who studied history in college but I have spent over 15 years traveling around the world and have visited many of the world’s historical sites and monuments.

Below is a list of the world’s best historic sites – sites that every traveler should visit at some point. The story told by these ruins and monuments is part of the shared human story. They show us how we have evolved as a species and as a civilization.
Located in southern Peru, this ruined city sits atop a mountain accessible only by train or hiking the Inca Trail. Rediscovered by Hiram Bingham in 1911, it was an important cultural center for the Inca civilization but was abandoned when the Spanish invaded the region. (It is famously referred to as the “Lost City of the Incas,” although that is actually Vilcabamba). The location was made a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983, and was named one of the New Seven Wonders of the World in 2007.
Concerns about the increasing number of tourists have led to limiting the number of people who can enter the site, although only a small part of what is needed. Hopefully they will narrow it down even more so this site can last for hundreds of years more.

Tikal National Park is home to the largest and best-preserved ruins of the ancient Maya civilization, the city-state centered here was the dominant power in the Maya world during the Classic Period (200 -900 CE). Located in Guatemala, make sure you spend the night in the park, because you’ll really be able to see it without the crowds.

If you are coming from Belize, you may find a bus at the border for 100 GTQ per person. Otherwise, the best way to get there from Belize is to take a tour from San Ignacio or drive yourself (beware of border officials who overcharge you for visas!). The main park gate opens at 6 am and officially closes at 6 pm. Adult tickets for foreigners are 150 GTQ (plus an additional 100 GTQ if you go in before 6am to see the sunrise).

The pyramids are truly a marvel of human engineering. They are over 3,000 years old, and we still don’t have a good idea how they were built or how the Egyptians made them so precisely. The three pyramids are aligned with the stars and the solstice, and contain many yet-to-be-opened (and unopened) spaces. I mean, how do they create a small space where people can’t crawl through?
Another popular and easier option to visit the pyramids is by guided tour. There are many options departing from Cairo, including full-day and half-day tours.

The most popular temples are Angkor Wat, Bayon, Ta Prohm, and Angkor Thom, and they always have crowds. To really experience the temple, you need to buy a three or five day pass. The best time to visit is early in the morning before the big tour groups arrive and stay late after they leave.

Located near Salisbury, this megalithic structure is over 3,000 years old. The boulders, which came all the way from Wales, are each about 13 feet (4 meters) high, seven feet (2 meters) wide, and weigh about 25 tonnes. Scholars are not sure how the builders got the stone there and have tried to repeat the feat, with disappointing results. Besides, we only have a vague idea of its purpose (we’re basically just speculating).

Stonehenge is now fenced off, and you can no longer enter the stone circle; visitors can only walk around the attraction. But it’s worth a visit for the mystery behind it. There is an excellent and detailed audio tour, which is included in the admission (advance online ticket booking required).

Stonehenge is open from 9:30am-7pm (closes at 5pm between 6 September and 15 March). Prices start at 20 GBP for adults and 12 GBP for children, although prices vary slightly seasonally.

The complex has slowly fallen into disrepair over the ages, and much of it is now confined, especially the floors and basements where everything is organized (although some tours, like this one, providing guided access to these restricted areas).
I definitely recommend a guided tour that includes skip-the-line access as the information presented by the authorities is not very detailed.
