Soneva Fushi, the Maldives’ first ‘Robinson Crusoe’ hideaway, is located on the private tropical island of Kunfunadhoo in Baa Atoll, a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve. The island – which is 1,400 m (4,600 ft) long and 400 m (1,300 ft) wide – is among the largest islands of the Maldives. In addition to the crystal clear sea, white beaches and tropical climate, the unusually rich vegetation of the island offers a unique natural experience. Massive luxurious multi-bedroom fairy tale villas and private residences are hidden under dense tropical foliage. In keeping with the shipwreck theme, many are built to resemble treehouses. All open to their own private stretch of sugar-white sand, and most have their own private saltwater swimming pools. Intuitive service is provided by Mr / Mrs Friday butlers who know what you want before you want it.

The villas at Miavana are perfectly designed by Silvio Rech and Leslie Carstens, the leading architects who also designed the North Islands of the Seychelles (see below), and allow guests to step directly onto the powder-soft sand from their private decks and enjoy the spectacular panoramic sunsets of the Indian Ocean stretching to the distant contours of mainland Madagascar. Boat and helicopter transfers are provided to the mainland, where resort guides can take you to the world of lemurs and chameleons, and a mosaic of undiscovered bays.

In Sanskrit, Soneva Jani is located on the island of Medhufaru, which is part of an uninhabited cluster of five islands in Noonu Atoll. The most exclusive hotel in the Maldives, and my absolute favorite hotel in the world, is surrounded by pristine beaches, covered in lush tropical greenery and surrounded by a 5.6 km (3.4 mi) lagoon of crystal clear water with uninterrupted 360° views of the Indian Ocean. Currently, Soneva Jani has 24 water villas and one beach villa, although additional beach villas are planned for later. Each of the 24 water villas are beautifully designed and feature a private pool and open onto their own section of the lagoon, with some villas featuring water slides that go directly from the top deck to the lagoon below. The highlight of the villas is the retractable roof in the master bedroom, which retracts at the push of a button so guests can lie in bed and gaze at the stars.
