The difference between a five-star hotel and the Burj Al Arab, which is said to be “the only seven-star hotel” in the world, is not the golden ceiling or the Hermès perfume. When you reach the top, true luxury is defined by service.
That’s what Carmen Barbera, 22 years old, a receptionist from France said. Recently crowned as the 2021 UAE Host, the young pro is fluent in French, Spanish and English. On the phone, even his voice sounds luxurious.

It’s a handy repertoire when checking out guests jetting off to the Burj Al Arab suites, which range from $1,200 to $25,000 a night. To enter the hotel, visitors cross a guarded bridge, and guests often arrive by Rolls-Royce escort or private helicopter.
While catering to Dubai’s wealthy travelers can be exhausting, Barbera says talking to Burj Al Arab guests is her favorite part of the job.
“From the first day I walked in, I knew I was going to love it … I love meeting people from all over the world,” she told Insider.
“What makes this hotel so amazing is the appeal it creates in the eyes of people,” he added.

Barbera started working at Jumeirah Hotels & Resorts, which owns the Burj Al Arab, two years ago as a bartender in the Maldives. Before that, he worked part-time at the Four Seasons in Paris while studying business at Emlyon Business School.
But in the middle of the Indian Ocean, they got a foothold. For six months, Barbera completed his waitress training at Jumeirah Vittaveli, famous for its private overwater cottages with water slides connected to the sea.
When the hotel was completely closed during the COVID-19, they moved to Ozen Life on the island of Maadhoo. The luxury resort with 24/7 service has a private island for staff, according to satellite images.

During training, Barbera said they rotate through beverage service, housekeeping and the front desk, adding that waiters must remember the entire hotel.
Beyond logistics and operations, Barbera says the key to success in the hospitality industry is emotional intelligence, because every day – and every guest – is different.
“You can’t predict anything and you need to act quickly in any situation,” Insider said. “Because when you are a waiter, you are the person in the eyes of the guests who can do everything and make anything happen.”
A few rules for interacting with guests, according to Barbera: respect privacy and confidentiality, read the room, and go to the guests (no one will ever feel like they need you).

“Some guests want to have a strong presence throughout the day from the waiter and some guests want more dignity,” he said. “So you have to use emotional intelligence to understand the expectations.”
In my current role as a receptionist, a typical workday starts at 7am and ends at 4 or 5pm. To keep the reception open 24/7, the staff rotates between day and night. Burj Al Arab hotel staff outnumber guests by a ratio of 6:1, as previously reported by Insider.
Preparation for the arrival of the guests begins a day or two before their arrival. There are dinner reservations to book, suite options to arrange, and airport transportation to arrange.
While Barbera is reluctant to reveal his salary, he says that Jumeirah has an active interest in ensuring that workers can live in Dubai, as it affects how workers behave at work.

Glassdoor estimates that a salary in the Jumeirah location in Dubai earns between $544.51 and $816.77 per month, with an additional salary of $3,267.08 per year. There is no current data to estimate hotel receptionist salaries. A Burj Al Arab spokesperson did not respond to multiple requests for comment on the accuracy of this estimate.
