So when the editors of the Big 7 travel website announced their list of the world’s top 50 bucket list destinations, we stopped in our tracks and started checking off the boxes.
The site surveyed its 1.5 million-strong social media audience to determine the best bucket lists for destinations around the world. According to Sarah Clayton-Lea, head of content at Big 7 Travel, this is the first place she has compiled this list. “Bucket list travel was a trend that popped up repeatedly in previous surveys that asked readers what type of travel content they enjoyed the most,” says Clayton-Leigh. “So our curiosity got the better of us and we wanted to know what places people are dreaming of for 2019/2020.”

The results of the world’s top 50 bucket list destinations include the most beautiful places on earth. “While white sandy beaches are still a must-visit for many, vibrant cities also appear on many bucket lists,” says Clayton-Lea. Countries with beautiful natural scenery and famous landmarks came out on top: 22% of the destinations on the list have white sandy beaches, while 52% have iconic cities.

In the study, Big 7 Travelfound people were more likely to add a destination to their list if they saw it on social media, and 33% of people search for a destination on their Instagram feed. “More than a third of readers say they’re reading. Instagram is inspired by travel, so it’s made a cut across cities with different neighborhoods (like Bo Kap in Cape Town),” says Clayton-Law.
Bali topped the list of the country’s 50 most popular bucket list destinations, but there was also an unexpected runner-up. “There are many favorite dream destinations on the top 10 list, but there are some surprises on the list: Paro Valley in Bhutan, for example, or Virunga National Park in Congo,” says Clayton-Lea. “I think they’re dismissing the need to release this massive appetite and can only assume that social media (and Netflix, in Virunga!) is responsible for spreading the word about these amazing places.”
Interesting facts revealed in the study: Most people only have an average of 11 places to visit with the hope of visiting seven of them in their lifetime.
