The difference between a five-star hotel and the Burj Al Arab, touted as “the only seven-star hotel in the world,” isn’t gilded ceilings or complimentary Hermes perfume. When you’re at the top, true luxury is defined by service.
That’s what Carmen Barbera, a 22-year-old receptionist from France, tells me. This young professional, who was recently recognized as the 2021 host of the UAE, is fluent in French, Spanish and English. Even his voice sounds luxurious on the phone.

It’s a repertoire he uses when he checks jet-set guests into his suites at the Burj Al Arab, which cost between $1,200 and $25,000 a night. To enter the hotel grounds, visitors cross a gated bridge, and guests are often escorted by a chauffeured Rolls-Royce or private helicopter.
While one might think that entertaining Dubai’s wealthy travelers would become boring, Barbara said that chatting with Burj Al Arab guests is her favorite pastime.
“From the first day I started, I knew I was passionate about it… I love meeting people from all over the world,” she told Insider.
He later added, “The wonderful thing about this hotel is the charm it creates in the eyes of the people.”

Barbara started working as a waitress in the Maldives two years ago for Jumeirah Hotels and Resorts, which includes Burj Al Arab. Before that, he worked part-time at the Four Seasons in Paris, while studying entrepreneurship at Emlyon Business School.
But he got in the middle of the Indian Ocean. Barbara trained as a waitress for six months at Jumeirah Vitaveli, famous for its private overwater villas with water slides connecting them to the sea.
When the hotel was closed during COVID-19, he was transferred to Ozen Life on Maadhoo Island. According to satellite images, the 24/7 luxury resort has a smaller, separate island for staff.

During training, Barbera said he rotates through the beverage, housekeeping and front office departments, adding that bartenders are expected to memorize the general layout of the hotel.
According to Barbara, logistics and operations aside, the key to success in the hospitality industry is emotional intelligence because every day – and every guest – is different.
“You can’t really predict anything and you always have to react very quickly to any situation,” he told Insider. Because as a bartender, in terms of guests, you are the person who can solve everything and make everything possible.
According to Barbara, a few rules of thumb when interacting with guests: Respect privacy and confidentiality, read the room, and approach the guest (never make them feel like they need you).

“Some guests want their bartender to be a big presence throughout the day, and some guests want more discretion,” he said. “So you have to really use your emotional abilities to understand expectations.”
In her current role as receptionist, a typical workday starts at 7am and ends at 4 or 5pm. To ensure reception staff at all hours of the day and night, employees alternate between day and night shifts. Insider previously reported that hotel staff outnumber guests at the Burj Al Arab by a ratio of 6:1.
Preparations for the arrival of guests begin a day or two before their arrival. Dinner reservations must be made, suite preferences set, and airport transportation arranged.
While Barbera was reluctant to divulge her salary, she said Jumeirah takes an active interest in ensuring employees can afford to live in Dubai because it affects employees’ attitudes at work.

Glassdoor estimates that bartenders at the Jumeirah location in Dubai earn between $544.51 and $816.77 per month, with an additional salary of $3,267.08 per year. Currently, there is no data to estimate the salary of hotel reception staff. A Burj Al Arab spokesperson did not respond to multiple requests for comment on the accuracy of this estimate.
“Here at Burj Al Arab, we aim to provide service that exceeds expectations,” said Barbara. This is where hospitality professionals can make a difference… they can transform a trip from pleasant or comfortable to extraordinary.
