How To Make A Bed Like A Hotel: 6 Clever Tips
I took some notes from hotel groups like Aman Resorts and Four Seasons, as well as boutique hotels like Camellas-Lloret and well-run Airbnbs. What made their space stand out? Why did I feel like I was in another room? Here’s what I found – it’s the culmination of all the little details. Yes, the overall design matters, but the little things count too. It all adds up to an experience worth talking about.
It’s one of the first experiences you connect with emotionally when you stay somewhere. How did it smell? This can be a good thing or a bad thing. It can be neutral or one of those scents that last a lifetime. Fragrance is very important in the home.
Do you have pets? Consider an air purifier. Do you like more neutral scents? Use unscented cleaning products. For me, I love a strong candle – one that brings my space together. I’ve always been a fan of Le Labo and Dyptique – I love using Santal 26 by Le Labo candles (the spray version) throughout my home or Dyptique’s Feu de Bois.
What makes a great hotel bed so great, apart from the bed itself? Quality sheets. It makes a world of difference. If it’s been a while, maybe it’s time to refresh your wardrobe. I love Parachute’s washed linen room sets. Same goes for the bathroom (Again a parachute for their towels). You touch them every day.
Tips For Designing A Hotel Room
One thing that always stands out about a hotel room is the lack of “stuff”. I tend to over-decorate (eg desk tops with too many books). The beauty and tranquility of a space often lies in what is not there, not in what is.
Clearing up space is huge for changing the atmosphere. I’m a fan of Marie Kondo, her book “The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up” is a great read on how to organize a space.
A carafe of water at the table, a simple coffee machine for the morning, all this reminds me of a hotel room. I love the Nespresso machine because it means I can get a quick cup like when I travel. Or a carafe of water with a glass by the bed, just like in a hotel room. I even picked up a cheap suitcase rack to help pack/use for guests who visit.
I find that the hotel rooms I adore the most, such as Aman Resorts, are always warm and inviting. There are no pops of red and yellow, it’s all bone, white, beige and accents. There’s something very comforting about it for me – again, it’s a personal taste. I tend to stay in hotels that have a very natural color palette, as I am drawn to that.

Have you ever noticed how many mirrors there are in a hotel room? It opens up the room, reflects light and adds a great accent.
You will never see a sofa that is too big in small hotel rooms. Why? Because it doesn’t fit and takes up space. Time and time again, I have noticed that well-designed hotel rooms have furniture commensurate with size. Never too big and never too small. This is something to keep in mind when choosing pieces – does it fit the space?
I kid you not – that stuff is dirty – so bring a clear plastic bag and put it over each unit. It will save you time and energy later because you won’t be dealing with some hideous bug…

That is, unless you want to live in the middle of a landfill. Hotel trash cans are quite small and the trash you generate will be quite large, so plan to fill the bin a few times and send an older child to empty it as a ‘chore’.
Oh, maybe this should have been a first… Seriously, soundproofing is so vital when staying in a hotel, something we didn’t notice for about 8 years until we stayed in a timber frame building and had to leave early due to a complaint…
This is especially true if you have an odd number of boys and girls and a number of them are old enough to need “privacy”. We only have four boys but 11 girls so we left the boys on the second bed in our room.
At home, we are very careful about what we watch on the screen. There are many reasons that shouldn’t appear when children are alone in a room armed with a dirty, albeit plastic, remote control!
Tips To Stay Healthy While Travelling
We hate dirty floors and it’s not fun to call housekeeping all the time, so the solution for us was to bring a small vacuum cleaner (can be found in the garage).
Don’t trust the hotel bed. Babies are pretty familiar with these things, drooling, chewing and wiping all sorts of other bodily fluids on them. It’s worth the extra effort to bring your own bacteria from home.
You know, clean the bathtub, toilet, table top, door handles, etc. You don’t have to come home and fight some unnamed illness for weeks (see number one above).
There are just some things I don’t trust cleaning. You know, I once saw a dear lady cleaning a hotel room and the glasses they offered for drinking water, well, they just rinsed them with water and wiped them with a towel (that was used on other surfaces) – YUCK!

There is often a coin-operated washing machine and dryer right on the premises. Kids (and adults) can go through clothes pretty quickly due to car sickness or spills on the road.
This will save you from the temptation to raid the hotel ice maker and refill the cooler (which you will need, trust me!).
Believe it or not, a giant bin of legos is all the toys you need. When there isn’t much to distract the group, this can do the trick! Older children also get into the mix. (We’ve never worried about small children with small parts because there are plenty of eagle eyes watching over them.)
Twisted crayons and mechanical pencils are recommended (no sharpeners required). Most of the time, my kids aren’t very excited about coloring books, so blank paper is best for us (I cut the sheets into quarters and staple them together to make mini notebooks).

Remember that there are no lifeguards on duty at these facilities and you want to prevent accidents. The year I found some cross seat floaties we all had so much fun in the pool! The little kids had some mobility and freedom and I knew they were safe.
There’s something about splashing around in cold water that tucks babies outside and prepares them for a deep sleep. A quick shower and change of clothes and they’re out like a light! Just make sure and rinse all the bathing suits and tie them over the shower rod until morning.
