Ohio’s only national park is in our backyard and only a half hour drive from Cleveland. Cuyahoga Valley National Park is free to visit, has over 125 miles of hiking trails, and can be enjoyed year-round.
Other things to do in/around CVNP include riding the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railway, shopping at Szalay’s Farm & Market in the summer and fall, snowshoeing in the winter, and visiting nearby Hale Farm & Village.
Even though the Cuyahoga Valley National Park is so close to home, you can easily fill an entire day and feel like an adventure.

Many people write off Akron as just a university town; But there are plenty of things to do in Akron to fill a day!
If your trip to Akron happens during baseball season, there’s also a chance to catch an Akron RubberDucks game. The minor league team is the Double-A affiliate of the Cleveland Indians.
A little further south, Canton also makes for a fun day trip from Cleveland. If you want, you can even drive through part of the Cuyahoga Valley National Park along the way.
You can also see some old cars at the Canton Classic Car Museum, or some old planes at the MAPS Air Museum if that interests you. Canton is also home to the First Ladies National Historic Site and the National First Ladies Library, housed in historic buildings that you can tour.

Located on the shores of Lake Erie in Ashtabula County, Lake Geneva bills itself as “Ohio’s premier summer resort” and makes for a perfect day or weekend getaway.
Ashtabula County also has the largest concentration of covered bridges in Ohio, so you may want to make a detour to see a few of them on your way home.
If you grew up in Northeast Ohio, then you probably have fond memories of family summer vacations at Cedar Point. If you didn’t grow up here, chances are you’ve still heard of Cedar Point, consistently ranked as the best amusement park in the world.
A day at Cedar Point is totally doable from Cleveland. Get there early and go home late to pack in as many thrill rides as possible.

But if amusement parks aren’t your thing, or if you’ve already visited Cedar Point enough, don’t forget Sandusky itself! Cedar Point is technically located in Sandusky, Ohio, but most visitors bypass this charming lakeside town entirely. Don’t be one of those people.
If Sandusky is your main destination for the day, consider heading to nearby Huron to hike the marshes at Sheldon Marsh State Nature Preserve.
Not far from Sandusky are Lake Marblehead, Port Clinton and Catawba Island. Most people associate this part of Ohio with ferries that take you to some of the islands in Lake Erie, but you can explore the entire area on your own.
Yes, Lake Erie has islands! And several of them are popular summer vacation spots for many Ohioans. The most popular islands are South Bass Island (home of Pat-in-Bay) and Kelly Island, which can be visited on day trips from Cleveland.

Which island you visit depends on what you are looking for. Put-in-Bay is often referred to as the “Key West of the North” and is best known for its bar scene. Kelly Island is better known for its parks but also has a lively bar/restaurant scene.
While it is possible to drive your own car to both islands, I recommend leaving your car on the mainland and either renting a golf cart when you get to the islands or taking a bike to get around.

South Bass can be accessed by taking a 20-minute ferry ride with Miller Ferry from Catawba Island, or using JetExpress from Port Clinton (25 minutes) or Sandusky (45 minutes). While Youngstown may seem strange, I grew up near this city and have watched it transform in recent years. There’s quite a lot to do downtown these days!

Located between Cleveland and Columbus, Mansfield often misses the big cities. But it’s totally worth its own day trip!
On your way home on I-71, don’t miss a stop at Grandpa’s Cheese Barn in Ashland. This is seriously one of my favorite places along I-71; I always come home with a bag full of delicious Ohio cheese and goodies from Sweeties.
Ohio’s Amish country is a popular destination for people from all over the world to visit because we have the largest Amish and Mennonite communities in the world. Lucky for us, the heart of Amish country is just a short drive from Cleveland in Holmes County.

You can also combine a visit to Ohio Amish country with a visit to Mohican State Park, which has river canoeing, hiking trails, and a popular mountain bike trail.
