These days, airlines know who’s buying a flight before they take off, and they’re making those travelers a lot of money and they can’t afford to miss it. With recent skyrocketing airfares, buying a plane ticket just a few days (or weeks) before departure can mean paying hundreds – if not thousands – of dollars. . This is why we always encourage travelers to book their flights at least 30 to 45 days in advance.

But this is not always possible. Whether it’s an unexpected schedule change, a death in the family, or something else, sometimes last-minute flight bookings are unavoidable. Here’s how to do it without breaking the bank.
How To Get Cheap Last Minute Flights
But when you find yourself needing to get on a plane soon, don’t wait. Booking your flight as soon as you have your plans in place can save you from paying more days. Within three to four weeks of departure, flight prices may increase as you get closer to your flight. Waiting for it to go down again is a losing game.
When time is short, it never pays to wait to book a flight. Unfortunately, the high prices you see on last-minute flights won’t go down. Book it fast.
As with your regular travel plans, you should start in one place: Google Flights.
Google Flights will show you a variety of options for the best airlines, airlines and prices without having to look at the prices of other sources of airfare. Thanks to some new features, Google will even show you if adjusting your schedule for a day or two could lower your costs.

Just looking for a last minute vacation? Use Google Flights Explore to find the best deals when you don’t care where you’re going: You need to fly somewhere soon.
And you’ll see why it’s the best search tool out there, whether you’re looking for last-minute flights or planning months in advance.
But be careful: You won’t find every airline on Google Flights. Select carriers including Southwest don’t list their fares on Google Flights – or any search engine, for that matter. So it may be worth checking directly with these airlines if you can get a better deal on last minute tickets.
If you are traveling for a funeral or an impending death in the family, the airline may be able to help you. They are called death fares.
Travel Hacks For Flying: Flight Hacks To Save Time, Money (+ Hassle)
Although the number of airlines that still offer dead fares has dwindled, a few airlines will still sell them: Delta, Air Canada, WestJet, Alaska Airlines, Hawaiian and a few others.
How much of a discount you might get is largely a mystery, but it’s worth calling the airline. Be prepared to provide a copy of the death certificate or doctor’s note. While this is a big hurdle during times of trouble, it can be a huge savings when you need to get somewhere.
It’s getting harder and harder to get great value from frequent flyer miles on US flights. That’s because airlines like Delta, American, and United have switched to dynamic award pricing, which means they often pay out more points when the price rises closer to departure. .
Or maybe you have a lot of credit card cash from a card like the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card? Find the best deals you can get using Google Flights, then book them through the Chase portal. You might not get the ultimate value, but it sure beats paying a little extra on your last minute fare.
Air Travel Is Getting Back To Normal After A Day Of Chaos
Booking two fares instead of a regular tour can give you more flexibility. You may be able to choose different airlines, combine points redemptions with fares, or combine your departure and arrival airports. Anything to save you a dozen (or a few hundred) bucks!
On the trip from Minneapolis-St. Paul (MSP) to Philadelphia a few years ago, I was able to pay to fly there for $44 on American. Surprisingly, this fare was available only six days before departure. I then booked a separate route on Delta using SkyMiles. This strategy saved me about $500 round trip in a very expensive travel time!
Heading to New York City? Be sure to check Newark (EWR), LaGuardia (LGA), and JFK. Weekend in Miami (MIA)? It is worth considering flying to Fort Lauderdale (FLL). When traveling to and from our nation’s capital, you have three options: Washington, DC-Reagan (DCA), Washington, D.C.-Dulles (IAD), and Baltimore (BWI). In Chicago, you can choose between Chicago-O’Hare (ORD) and Chicago-Midway (MDW).
Using Google Flights, you can usually enter the city name and it will give you the option to select all the airports in the area.
Heathrow Airport Says Passenger Cap Has Eased Uk Travel Chaos
Google Flights lets you search for up to seven origin and destination airports at once, bringing you the lowest possible fares from your options.
Here’s a good example: Looking for fares to Minneapolis-St. Paul (MSP) to New York City (JFK) in a few weeks, you’ll have to pay $553 … or even more. But by expanding your search to include Newark (EWR) — arguably a better airport if you’re going to Manhattan — you can drop that price to $360.
Sometimes even mixing and matching local airports on the same trip can help keep your costs down. And if you really have trouble finding cheap options, it’s worth considering flying to an airport a few hours from your destination and renting a car. Whatever it takes!
Last minute travel can be difficult, but sometimes necessary. Being creative and finding alternatives to the traditional way of booking flights can be the key to saving when it’s hard to find good deals.
