In the 1760s, Moro pirates from Mindanao visited the peaceful towns of Dumaguete in search of slaves.
To warn the locals, the townspeople built a coral stone tower called the Campanario de Dumaguete, also known as the Dumaguete Belfry, the oldest in the Visayas.
