Face masks on airplanes have become the norm as passengers slowly return to the skies, but Qatar Airways has taken this a step further, announcing it. Passengers will be required to wear a face shield — in addition to a face mask or face mask.
The Middle East carrier says it will carry protective equipment – including face shields, gloves, surgical masks and disposable gowns – before boarding its flight.
The face mask, which is removable, will come in two sizes, one for adults and one for children. Children under the age of two are exempt.
Qatar Airways To Fly Unwanted A380s After A350 Grounding
Face shields are essential for economy class passengers, unless they are eating or drinking, the airline said. According to Qatar, those traveling in business class can wear shields “at their own discretion, as they have more space and privacy.”
“Anyone who refuses to wear a face shield during the check-in process will not be allowed to travel,” a Qatar Airways spokesperson told Travel.
The airline is also promoting personal protective equipment for employees. Indoor workers must wear disposable protective clothing, matching their clothing, plus safety glasses, gloves and masks.
“By introducing these additional safety and hygiene measures, our customers can rely on us and our unparalleled expertise to fly them safely,” Qatar Airways Group CEO Akbar Al Baker said in a statement.
Welcome To Qatar Airways
“As the largest international airline that has always been infected with this disease, we have become one of the most experienced in safety and hygiene. We will continue to lead the industry in what about the service provided to our passengers, so they can travel with confidence.”
Qatar said the measures come as it begins to resume operations that were halted at the start of the pandemic. It resumed operations to 11 more locations on July 1 and plans to increase that to 65 by mid-July.
Many airlines across the world have made face coverings mandatory on board due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Forcing a face shield over a mask can be another.

DUBAI, Sept 29 () – Qatar Airways will resume its flights with Airbus ( AIR.PA ) A380s earlier than planned to make up the lost capacity and control of some A350s, according to a report published on Wednesday.
The airline last year grounded 10 of its A380s after the COVID-19 hit on long-haul flights, and said it would only use five of them when they returned to service.

Executive Travel, quoting the airline’s CEO, said Qatar Airways will retire five A380 aircraft in November, and all 10 could return next year.
Akbar Al Baker said “We will find the right for our passengers who need flights to go to their loved ones for Christmas.”
The five A380s will give the Gulf carrier more than half the 4,000 seat capacity it lost with Qatari’s order of 13 A350s in August.
The downgrade followed allegations by Qatar Airways that the fuselage was under-painted on each of its increasingly serious flights.

The airline has been locked in a months-long public dispute with Airbus over the allegations, insisting it will not take delivery of any A350s until the issue is resolved.
Al Baker in January said that A380s – the world’s largest passenger aircraft – are the “worst aircraft” in terms of air quality.
Executive Traveler also reported that Qatar Airways is looking to sell “extra” Boeing 777 pilots to Boeing ( BA.N ) from British Airways for “at least the next six months.” Qatar Airways is a minority shareholder of British Airways-owner IAG (ICAG.L).FILE – The first Qatar Airways flight in three years landed at King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, Monday, Jan. 11, 2021.
