Travelers who need to bring more than the MLHW-approved quantity of medicine or medical device must obtain a “Yakkan Shoumei” (import certificate) before traveling and present a prescription to a customs official upon arrival in Japan. Japanese government approval of the certificate may take several weeks to process and must be received before the medicine or medical device can be brought into Japan.
