Every country we’ve been to has offered something different, we’ve learned and grown in different ways while we’ve been there, and each one has been special in its own way. I know it’s a cliché, but it’s true.

We have lived and traveled in 65 countries in our 10 years on the road, and although we have never been able to identify a country as our favorite, we have managed to narrow it down to a top 10 of the best. countries to visit in 2020.

For clarity, I’ve organized this list first into our picks for the best overall travel destinations (along with a few finalists), and then I’ve broken it down into different categories such as the best countries to visit. . for beaches, best countries to visit for hiking and outdoors, best countries to visit for food and culture etc.
This list should help you decide which country is best for your 2020 travel plans based on the type of trip you’re looking for!
By the way: This list is completely subjective. While we’ve had good experiences in the countries listed below, it’s no indication of how good they are overall or if some are actually better than others to travel to. Travel is completely personal and while these are our favorites, they may not be yours. In the same way, they might be the ones we don’t like so much.

Of course, every traveler is different. Some may be looking for nightlife and parties and therefore their favorite countries may be in Europe. Some may be looking for the best museums or the best for bird watching. For us, these are the things we think of when we think of our favorite countries:
Dariece and I are self-proclaimed foodies. It’s not that we know how to eat, we like to eat. Does it count? I think so.
With many of the destinations we visit, the first thing we do is look for a food tour. We believe that food is often a good way to take a deeper level into the culture, family and tradition of a country, so we value tasty food more than many other factors when it comes to travel. For us, many of the best countries to visit just so happen to have amazing food.
Maybe it’s because we’re Canadian (sorry), or maybe we’re too sensitive, but we like to travel to places where we’re welcome. A warm smile can go a long way and the places we return to the most have two things in common – good food and friendly locals.

Isn’t that what travel is all about? We love culture shock, but more than that, we love cultural awakening. One of our favorite parts of traveling is learning how different people around the world live. That is why countries that are more similar to our country (such as the United States) do not appear in this list.
It’s not because they aren’t the best countries to visit, it’s just that they don’t give us that desire to learn and understand that we have from countries that are further away from our cultural education.
There is nothing like getting lost in an old medina or walking on a cobblestone walkway while looking at 1000 year old castles and cathedrals. Historical architecture has always fascinated us.
Coming from Canada where we have a limited history, we are interested in visiting churches that have been standing since before the Europeans even discovered our country, and looking in amazement at pyramids that have been around thousands of years before Christ

If you are not a wine drinker, this would not be a criterion for you to choose your main countries, but for us… it is. We love wine! Some of our favorite experiences on the road have been at wineries, or wine bars, or a little more than a good glass of wine. Everything is a little better with a bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon.
If you’ve been following us for a while, you know that some of our most varied events include walking and hiking. From our 8-day independent tour through the Mongolian Steppe and our 10-day Circuit O tour in Chile, to our jungle trekking adventure at Ciudad Perdida in Colombia, we never shied away from a walking challenge.

We always had a hard time narrowing down our favorites. This list is in no particular order because Dariece and I can’t agree on one. We both agreed that these were the best countries to visit in 2020, but we couldn’t decide if one was better than the other.
Greece will always be one of our favorite countries to visit, which is why we have returned again and again, spending almost 3 months in the country in total.
Greece has it all. Beautiful Mediterranean beaches, friendly people, incredible food, diverse landscapes, great excursions and timeless architecture and history. With more than 220 inhabited islands, you can return to Greece for the rest of your life and still have a lot to discover.
Greece oozes romance. From the sunsets of Santorini and the white sandy beaches of Crete to the more distant treasures of Chios and Lesbos, this is a place where you can enjoy life to the fullest. Exactly what the Greeks do!

Renting a private boat and exploring the hidden coves of Corfu was one of the highlights of our trip. Riding a motorbike around Santorini, driving a car in Crete and staying on the island of Zakynthos are all memories that make us return to Greece again and again. Not to mention, it is one of the cheapest European countries to visit.
Whenever we think of a place to live as Digital Nomads, Greece is near the top (if only the wifi was better…).
A mild winter climate with hot and humid summers, a beach holiday destination with winters, history, art and culture. Try to find a traveler who does not like to explore Greece and the Greek islands.
Kefalonia: This island is definitely one of our favorite places to visit in Greece. There are so many things to do in Kefalonia that you could easily spend a week here without getting tired. We ended up staying for 5 days in Kefalonia and really wish we had more time. From some of Greece’s most stunning beaches and amazing restaurants to interesting historical sites, Kefalonia should be on any Greek travel itinerary – up there with the popularity of Santorini and Crete.

Corfu: This is where Dariece and I spent our 10th anniversary, so it definitely has a special place in our hearts. But it is also the island where we rent a boat for the day and discover hidden bays and beaches for ourselves. There are many things to do in Corfu. It has a beautiful and romantic capital, some amazing landscapes and great accommodation options.
Santorini: A trip to Greece would not be complete without visiting the whitewashed buildings of Oia, or watching the sunset from the rocky cliffs with a glass of wine. Santorini is probably also the most romantic place in Greece (if not all of Europe) despite the crowds.
Crete: For walking, beaches, history, food and incredible architecture, it’s really hard to beat Crete. Being the largest island in Greece, it takes a while to explore so allow plenty of time. We spent 10 days here driving around the island, and even that felt a bit rushed. It is better to rent a car to go.
Zakynthos: Zakynthos (aka Zante) is easily one of our favorite islands in Greece. We rented a nice apartment here in a family home and explored the island by car for 10 days. With beautiful beaches, breathtaking landscapes and delicious Greek and international cuisine, Zakynthos surprised us at every turn. There are so many things to do in Zakynthos, including visiting the iconic Longwreck Cove that one could easily spend more than 2 weeks there and not get bored.
