After more than a decade as a thrifty nomad, I’ve had the privilege of visiting dozens of budget-friendly countries that make travel as cheap as possible.

The Best Places To Visit In July 2022

These destinations offer affordable accommodation, cheap food and plenty of activities and excursions that can be enjoyed without breaking the bank.

Here’s my list of the best cheap travel destinations so you can get inspired and plan your next affordable adventure:

Thailand is where it all started for me, so it holds a special place in my heart. This is where I decided to quit my job and travel the world. I lived there. I liked it there. Thailand is amazing.

With a tourist trail stretching back decades, Thailand is the backpacker heart of Southeast Asia, and you can get by on $25-$35 a day through cheap guesthouses, budget street food (which can be found for as little as $1 ). !), local buses, and the multitude of cheap and free attractions. If youare spending all your time on the islands and in expensive accommodations, expect to pay closer to $60 USD per day. However, even for the price, Thailand is still one of the friendliest destinations in the world and should not be missed!

Our Top 10 Bucket List Destinations

Do you want to wander through ancient ruins, hike in the jungle, surf and eat delicious food with few tourists around? Visit the smaller countries in Central America – think El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua and Guatemala. Here you will find most budget hotels around 15-30 USD per night, meals for less than 5 USD, most bus rides for the same price, and beer for only a dollar.

Belize, Panama, Costa Rica – these are expensive destinations by regional standards (however, they are still quite affordable). If you visit these Central American countries, you can get by on $40-50 a day as a backpacker or make $100 a day and live large. Your money goes a long way in this part of the world. And with so many countries to choose from, it’s easy to jump in and see a lot without breaking the bank.

While you could put all of Southeast Asia on this list, Cambodia is one of my favorite countries in the region—it’s affordable, beautiful, and the locals are incredibly welcoming. You can get a private air-conditioned room for $25 USD, street food for $2-5 USD, and national transportation for $20-25 USD. If you’re spending close to $50 dollars a day, you’re living large.

Cambodia is cheaper than popular Thailand, but just as beautiful and full of some of the most beautiful people in the world. Plus, it’s home to the amazing Angkor Wat (which, although expensive to visit, is well worth the cost!).

Where To Travel After A Break Up

Located in Southeast Europe, the Balkans is the cheapest region in Europe. Comprised of a handful of countries – most of which see very few tourists – this is an off-the-radar region that’s super cheap while also offering incredible value. While places like Dubrovnik have seen an influx of tourists (thanks to the cruise ships that dock there), most of the area is ripe for adventure travel. There is cheap wine, amazing hiking and nature, amazing beaches, rich food and wild nightlife. It is Europe’s best kept secret.

You can get by on as little as US$30 a day – a fraction of what you would pay in Western Europe. A week’s worth of groceries costs only US$25, while a beer costs about US$2.

And while the area was once known to be unsafe, things have improved significantly over the past decade. There is a growing backpacking sector here and tourism is on the rise. This is the least explored area in Europe – but not for long, so visit before the crowds arrive and the price goes up.

China has enchanted travelers since Marco Polo crossed the Silk Road in 1275. While China’s days as a cheap destination are over, the country remains a budget destination – and one of the cheapest in Asia – but with a caveat. You have to get out of the big cities. Sure, the cities are still a bargain. Hostels cost less than US$20, food is US$2-5 per meal, and local transportation in cities costs less than a dollar.

But, the land becomes even cheaper if you come from the slaughterhouse. This is where you’ll find the best travel deals and bargains! China still remains one of the best places in the world, and with its sheer size (it’s the third largest country by land area), there’s plenty to see and do here!

Although always a cheap country, the Indian rupee was riding high at 39 rupees to the US dollar. Now you get 82 rupees to the dollar – that’s almost 50 percent more money to travel with. Unless you book five-star resorts and eat only Western meals, you’ll struggle to spend US$50 a day here. You can manage closer to US$30 by staying in cheap hostels, taking second-class trains and avoiding Western food. you want Splash out, you can live big for $60 USD a day. Even iconic sights like the Taj Mahal—a wonder of the world—are extremely affordable (only $13 entry).

India is an affordable backpacker destination with a rich cultural history, mouthwatering food, helpful and curious locals, incredible regional diversity, great tea and plenty to do. It is a huge place that is best explored in one big trip or in several smaller chunks. Either way, don’t miss India.

Georgia has everything I need in a destination: it’s cheap, has delicious food and wine, offers great hiking and mountain scenery, and is devoid of large numbers of tourists. I loved it immediately and wished I had visited sooner (I actually extended my stay when I visited because I liked it so much!).

The Ten Best Places To Travel With Kids

Tucked away in the Caucasus, Georgia has been at a cultural crossroads for centuries, but it’s not as popular as it should be. Tbilisi is a city bursting with activity, while the rest of the country offers unexpected adventure in a rugged, off-the-beaten-track atmosphere.

Here, too, you can get by on almost nothing, if travelers with a low budget only spend 25-30 dollars a day. A beer costs about US$2, a week’s worth of groceries costs US$25-30, and most museums and historical sites only cost US$2-3.

Although it may feel out of the way, Georgia is one of the next great backpacker destinations. I would go back in a heartbeat!

Not all Euro countries are created equal, and Portugal is one of the negotiating countries in the region – and one of my favorites. I fell in love with Israel the first time I visited. How could I not, with beautiful beaches, rolling wine country, beautiful coastal cliffs, delicious food, cheerful locals and historic towns and all at bargain prices.

World’s Best Places To Travel

Portugal has become much more popular and crowded in recent years (it has a growing vagabond scene) and Lisbon has become particularly expensive as people have moved there and prices have gone up. It’s a great place! But once you get outside of Lisbon, prices are still relatively cheap compared to the rest of Western Europe – and you’ll also see far fewer tourists. Expect to make do with $50-60 USD per day if you’re backpacking on a budget.

While it’s beautiful in the summer, if you’re looking for a cheap place to spend the winter in Europe, Portugal is one of your best options.

Spent a lot of time there. And I was happy. Mexico City is a foodie paradise, Oaxaca has huge amounts of charm (and an endless flow of mezcal to boot!), and the Yucatan is perfect for road trips and cenote trips. And because it’s so close to the US, it’s not only cheap (beer is only $1-2, groceries are about $25 a week, and you can get here on less than $50 a day), but it is cheap to get – double profit !

While there are some areas that are not as safe to explore, most of the country is yours to enjoy. Regardless of your interests – beaches, parties, food, history, nature – there is a corner of the country that you can safely enjoy without breaking the bank. I also do tours here if you prefer to travel with a group.
