Consider Art Therapy For Seniors Living With Dementia

In 2012, after several memory tests and finally a CT scan, my dear mom was diagnosed with mixed dementia.

My stepdad has heart failure and is often unwell, so when mom’s memory really started to decline in 2014, I felt it was time for them to be closer to me. Besides cleaning, cooking, and shopping, the most important thing I do for my mom is to schedule quality time with her every day for crafts and music.

My mom has always been a very creative person and passed on her love of arts and crafts to me. I graduated in 1984 with a degree in Art & Textile Design, but for many years my art took a back seat. It only came back when I discovered how invaluable art therapy could be for those with memory problems.

Of course, what works for one person may not work for another, but art therapy helped my mom live a meaningful life, stay happy and engaged despite her condition. Here are five of her favorite activities!

Valentine’s Day Flower Craft: Activities For Dementia Patients

My mom’s favorite hobby is making beautiful paper flowers. She loves making things to give to visiting doctors and nurses…as well as the dentist, optician, hairdresser, friends and anyone else who admires them!

I provide a cardstock template for the petals and leaves and my mom will happily sit for hours cutting out the beautiful, brightly colored crepe paper. Together we glue the stamens and petals onto the stems and once she has finished two or three with me, she can continue on her own. Beautiful crepe paper flowers fill the house and are a constant reminder that she is wonderfully creative.

Mom may have forgotten how to draw herself, but she sure hasn’t forgotten how to color! The pencil crayons are great for her to work with – so clean and easy to use. Instead of keeping my mom’s creations inside her coloring book or out of sight, we cut out her images to use on handmade cards.

We also frame her best colorings and display them on the wall as constant reminders to her that she has such a special talent.

Mom loves making handmade cards for all occasions! Even though she can no longer make the designs herself, I make her a template that she uses to cut out embellishments and make her cards. I find that card making encourages mom’s self-expression and reduces her stress and anxiety. Cutting out patterns helps with hand-eye coordination, while gluing shapes helps with focus and concentration. This kind of art therapy really gives my mom a sense of purpose, accomplishment, and pride!

I make sure we have a puzzle on the table every day so my mom can work on it whenever she wants, which stimulates her brain. We love working on puzzles together, but this is also an activity she is happy to do on her own, provided they are not too difficult. My mom is still able to manage 100 piece puzzles, but only just. Soon I will need to buy puzzles with fewer pieces so she doesn’t get discouraged or frustrated.

Easy Halloween Crafts For Seniors

This is another simple craft, but it’s so pretty and so much fun! We turn our decorated shells into amazing wind chimes, giving mom a great sense of purpose and accomplishment. We also paint stones to make unique paperweights.

First, I milk the stones and pencil outlines of flowers or cats (my mom’s two favorite things!) and then mom colors them in with markers and markers. A quick spray of lacquer and they make great gifts that she is very proud of.
