Best Places To Visit In The World For Couples

After more than a decade of being a bit of a nomad, I’ve had the privilege of visiting dozens of budget-friendly countries that make cheap travel as easy as possible.

Our Top 10 Bucket List Destinations

These destinations offer affordable accommodation, affordable food, and plenty of activities and excursions that can be enjoyed without breaking the bank.

Here is my list of the best cheap travel destinations to get inspired and plan your next trip:

Thailand is where it all started for me so it has a special place in my heart. That’s when I decided to quit my job and travel the world. I stayed there. I loved it there. Thailand is amazing.

With a tourist trail that goes back decades, Thailand is the heart of Southeast Asia, and you can get by on 25-35 USD a day thanks to cheap guesthouses, budget street food (available for as little as $1 USD!), local buses , and many other cheap and inexpensive attractions. If you spend all your time on the islands and in the expensive resorts, expect to pay close to $60 USD per day. However, for the price, Thailand is still one of the friendliest places in the world and should not be avoided!

Do you want to walk through ancient ruins, walk in the forest, surf, and eat delicious food with few tourists around? Visit the smallest countries in Central America—think El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Guatemala. Here you will find many budget hotels for around 15-30 USD per night, food for less than $5 USD, many bus trips for the same price, and beer for less than a dollar.

Belize, Panama, Costa Rica – these are the most expensive places by regional standards (but very affordable). If you visit these countries in Central America, you can get by on 40-50 USD a day as a backpacker or spend 100 USD a day and live very well. Your money goes a long way in this part of the world. And with so many countries to choose from, it’s easy to get around and see a lot without breaking the bank.

While you could put all of Southeast Asia on this list, Cambodia is one of my favorite countries in the region—it’s affordable, beautiful, and the people are incredibly welcoming. You can get a private air-conditioned room for $25 USD, street food for $2-5 USD, and transportation across the country for $20-25 USD. If you spend close to 50 USD per day, you are always great.

Cambodia is cheaper than the famous Thailand but beautiful and full of the nicest people in the world. In addition, it is home to the amazing Angkor Wat (which, although expensive to visit, is well worth the price!).

Located in Southeast Europe, the Balkans is the cheapest region in Europe. Encompassing many countries – many of which see very few tourists – it’s an off-the-radar region that’s surprisingly accessible but offers incredible value. Although places like Dubrovnik have seen an increase in tourists (thanks to cruise ships heading there), much of the region is ripe for adventure travel. There is cheap wine, amazing hiking and nature, amazing beaches, delicious food, and wild nightlife. This is Europe’s best kept secret.

You can earn as little as $30 USD per day – a fraction of what you would pay in Western Europe. A week’s worth of groceries costs as little as $25 USD and a beer costs about $2 USD.

And while the area was known to be dangerous, things have improved significantly over the past decade. Backpacking is a growing trend here and tourism is booming. This is one of the least explored regions in Europe – but don’t go so far as to visit before the crowds and prices rise.

China has interested travelers since Marco Polo crossed the Silk Road in 1275. While the days of China as a cheap destination have gone, the country is still a budget place – and one of the cheapest in Asia – but with fear. You need to get out of the big cities. Yes, cities are still talking about transactions. Hostels cost less than $20 USD, meals are $2-5 USD per meal, and local transportation in cities runs less than a dollar.

However, the country will be cheaper, if you are off the beaten track and inland. This is where you can find the best travel deals and bargains! China remains one of the most expensive places in the world and, due to its size (it is the third largest country by land area), there is a ton to see and do here!

While it has always been a free country, the Indian rupee has been climbing as high as 39 rupees to the US dollar. Now, you get 82 rupees to the dollar – that’s almost 50 percent more than your carry-on. Unless you book five-star resorts and eat only Western food, you’ll find it hard to spend $50 USD a day here. You can spend close to $30 USD by staying in cheap guesthouses, taking second-class trains, and avoiding Western food. And if you want to splash out, you can live very well on as little as $60 USD a day. Even the sights like the Taj Mahal – Wonder of the World – are very affordable (only 13 USD to enter).

India is an inexpensive backpacking destination with a rich cultural history, mouth-watering cuisine, helpful and knowledgeable locals, incredible regional diversity, great tea, and plenty of things to do. It’s a huge area that’s best explored either in one big trip or in a few smaller chunks. Anyway, don’t miss India.

Georgia has everything I need in a destination: it’s affordable, has great food and wine, offers amazing hikes and mountain views, and doesn’t have too many tourists. I loved it immediately and wish I had visited earlier (I extended my visit when I did because I loved it so much!).

Best Places To Visit In 2018 According To Travel + Leisure

Tucked away in the Caucasus, Georgia has been on the cultural trail for centuries but is rarely as popular as it should be. Tbilisi is a city full of action, while the rest of the country offers exciting adventures that are challenging, off-road.

You can get away with nothing here, with budget travelers spending as little as $25-30 USD per day. Beer is around 2 USD, weekly grocery costs around 25-30 USD, and most museums and historical sites only cost 2-3 USD.

Although it may feel off the beaten path, Georgia is one of the next best backpacking destinations. I would go back in a heartbeat!

Not all Euro countries are created equal, and Portugal is one of the most marketable countries in the region – and one of my favorites. I fell in love with the country the first time I visited. How could I not, with beautiful beaches, vibrant wine country, stunning sea cliffs, delicious food, cheerful locals, and historic cities all at affordable prices.

The Top 10 Places To Visit In The World

Portugal has become more popular and crowded in recent years (the summary is out with the digital name) and Lisbon has become more expensive as people move there and increase prices. It’s a beautiful place after all! However, once you get outside of Lisbon, prices are still very low compared to the rest of Western Europe – and you will see very few tourists. Expect to shell out 50-60 USD per day if you’re on a budget.

While it’s great in the summer, if you’re looking for a cheap place to spend the winter in Europe, Portugal is one of your favorites.

He spent a lot of time there. I was blown away. Mexico City is a foodie’s paradise, Oaxaca has many attractions (and a non-stop flow of mezcal to boot!), and the Yucatan is perfect for road trips and cenote exploring. And since it’s so close to the US, it’s not only cheap (beer is only $1-2 USD, groceries around $25 USD a week, and you can spend less than $50 USD a day here) but it’s free to access – double win!

Although there are areas that are less safe to explore, most of the country is yours. Whatever you’re interested in – beaches, partying, food, history, nature – there’s a corner of the country you can enjoy safely without breaking the bank. I also run tours here if you prefer to go with a group.
