Washington is the #1 best historic city to visit in the US and #8 overall for best cities in the country.
“Visitors to Washington, D.C. they know there are many sights and monuments to explore, many Smithsonian museums and many outdoor activities, in addition to a great dining scene,” said US News Editor-in-Chief Erin Shields.
US News takes many different things into consideration when ranking a destination. Everything from the number of museums and museum access to the cultural sites, atmosphere and — friendliness?
“We do a lot of research on reviews — whether it’s hotels, attractions, activities, tours — and we see what visitors are saying about the people they interact with,” Shields said. “It sure is hard.

“Continue to welcome visitors, offer lots of interesting things to do and see,” Shields said. “I think we continue to offer a great restaurant scene and a variety of tours and attractions that really bring in all types of visitors – everything from family travelers to couples to solo travelers.”
“I think the people who live in this area (US News is located in Washington) should definitely be grateful and take advantage of the things they have to do,” Shields told .
“I think living here is probably a great thing because there are so many museums and attractions.” … So if you don’t use it, I would really try to do it before the end of the year.”
Williamsburg, Virginia was ranked #5 in the Best Historic Cities list as well as #9 in the Best Small Cities category.

“Williamsburg is quite unique. You have costumed interpreters who take guests on guided tours so people can learn a little more about the history of the Revolutionary War. “The really interesting thing they do is the ghost tours, which people seem to really enjoy,” Shields said.
Ocean City, Maryland, ranked 22nd in the Best Small Cities category, which are destinations of 50,000 people or less.
“Ocean City is truly a family destination. They have activities for all ages. you can go mini-golf, go to the beach, boardwalk, try some of the water sports activities, and then finish it all off with steamed crab for the day,” said Shields.
“Charlottesville is really easy to visit from the DC area, either by train or by car, but overall they have tons of wineries and breweries to explore,” Shields explained. “It is surrounded by beautiful mountain scenery and there are many possibilities for hiking in the area.”
Where Dc Ranks Among Best Places In The Us To Visit
Overall, the best place in the world to visit is Paris, followed by New Zealand’s South Island, Rome, Tahiti and London.
“Our US News rankings take into account analysis from editors, experts and users to publish a variety of destinations, so people thinking about planning a trip can check out our rankings to see which vacation will be the best for them,” said Shields.
