This book was given to me by my mother’s best friend, Debbie Harmon, during a recent visit to her home in Santa Fe. During dinner the discussion turned to books and she immediately went to her bookshelf and selected one for me. I read it slowly, enjoying it, just as one does with great books. As you can guess, the focus is on surfing.

I first read this book when I was 22 years old and living on the island of Andros in the Bahamas. Boats were very new to me at this stage in my life and I was thinking about someone going on a solo trip in a 24 foot boat at sea.

This is the story of a cross-country trip that Kerouac took with Neal Cassidy. I read it in my early twenties and it inspires us to hit the road and explore our own adventures, as countless other people who have read it have done. It’s a classic, even an epic, and a must-read for anyone who dreams of travel. This is easily one of our favorite and favorite travel books.

Do you like trips? Do you like whiskey? If any of these (or both) apply to you, then this is the book for you. Follow Banks on a tour of Scotland as he goes from distillery to distillery, and see if you can find plane tickets online to see and taste them for yourself.

My grandfather recommended this book to me because it relates to our mutual love: the Appalachian Trail. He read it first and told me to try it. It sat on the shelf for years before I read it, but he was right. It’s easily on our list of best travel books because you’re almost guaranteed to be walking and hiking along the way.

For years after reading this book, I would buy extra copies I had on hand and give them to friends I thought might appreciate it. It had such a big impact on me. This is one of those rare books that I read more than once. This isn’t your typical travel book, but it’s on the list because it influenced the course of my life and led to decisions that make the following dreams worthwhile.

Another book has been turned into a movie. This book is also written by Jon Krakuer. It won me over from the moment I opened it. I’ll tell you more, but I don’t want to spoil it for you. If you are looking for a book that will take you on a journey you will never forget, choose this one.
