Not one bargain, but two, Pod Hotel Group has two Midtown locations for you. Both of them are in its signature style: hip yet affordable. If you want to be right in the middle of it all, Pod 51 is the place to book. Just a few blocks from booming illuminated Times Square. Rooms have everything you need (including a desk, free Wi-Fi, TV and rain shower.) With six pod options to choose from, rooms can fit anywhere between one and four guests, so bring friends if you like. This Upper West Side hostel has a great location: you’re right off Broadway Street and a short-minute walk to Central Park. So the situation is great: what about the hostel? Well, you’re in a good place there too. It’s a hostel in the truest sense of the word, so that means dormitory-style rooms with shared bathrooms, but it’s got a reputation for cleanliness and top-notch service throughout. And if you’re looking for some orchestrated fun? HI NYC holds activities for its guests including pub crawls and quiz nights. Oh, and there’s free WiFi.

This is another cheap NYC hotel with a great location. It’s on the southwest side of Central Park, so you’ve got the entire park at your doorstep, with Hell’s Kitchen and Midtown within easy reach. You can share to keep costs down (a four-bed room works out to about $60 a night) or you can get one yourself for a little more. There is also a large fitness center if you want to take care of yourself, or pay a little physical austerity after really enjoying the New York nightlife.

Opened in 1907 as the American Seamen’s Friend Society Sellers Home, this 14-story landmark was a residential hotel when Eric Good and Sean McPherson took it over and renovated it. The wood-paneled rooms were inspired by vintage train sleeper compartments—there’s a bed (or bunk bed) with built-in storage and brass hooks to hang your clothes. There are no en suites, however, which are reserved for captain’s cabins, with iHome docks and wall-mounted TVs. The vibe you’d expect in prime trendy Metpacking District accommodation. There’s also Old Rose, where you can sample local craft beers and natural wines on tap, as well as fine local produce cooked Italian-style for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and late-night dining. The hotel also offers a 24-hour front desk, so you can truly experience the sleepy city.

With a name so steeped in history and character, you won’t be surprised to discover that the Harlem Flophouse is a darkly atmospheric Victorian townhouse. Much of the decor has remained the same, so stepping through the door at the top of the stone staircase is like stepping back in time (the website looks old school, too!) You’re in good company, too, as each room is named after an artistic great from Harlem’s past, such as Thelonious Monkand Chester. Himes, named after Jazzy. While the location is just north of central NYC, the lights and music are only a short subway ride away, and there are plenty of restaurants and bars nearby. The idea was to make it a European style guesthouse but also a cheaper alternative to the usual NYC hotels, they succeeded. While the heart of NYC is a short subway ride away, you’re right by Columbia University and the world-famous Paris Blues Jazz Club.
