Cheap Vacation Destinations For Families

After more than a decade of being a budget traveler, I’ve had the privilege of visiting dozens of budget-friendly countries.

Family Travel Guide

These destinations offer affordable accommodation, cheap food and plenty of activities and excursions that can be enjoyed without breaking the bank.

Here’s a list of my favorite cheap places to travel right now to help you plan your next affordable adventure:

It has a special place in my heart because it started for me in Thailand. This is where I decided to quit my job and travel the world. I lived there. I loved it there. Thailand is amazing.

Off the tourist trail decades ago, Thailand is the heart of backpacking in Southeast Asia, and you can get between $25-35 USD a day thanks to cheap guesthouses, budget street food (which can be found for less than $1 USD). !), local buses and many cheap and free attractions. If you spend your time on the islands and in expensive accommodations, expect to pay around $60 USD per day. However, even at the price, Thailand is still one of the most bargain destinations in the world and should not be missed!

Want to wander around ancient ruins, trek in the jungle, surf and eat delicious food with few tourists around? Visit the smaller countries of Central America—think El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Guatemala. Here you will find many budget hotels for around $15-30 USD per night, meals under $5 USD, many bus rides for the same price, and beers for less than a dollar.

Belize, Panama, Costa Rica — these are expensive destinations by regional standards (yet they’re also very affordable). If you visit these Central American countries, you can earn $40-50 USD a day as a backpacker or live large on $100 a day. Your money goes a long way in this part of the world. And with so many countries to choose from, it’s easy to bounce around and see a lot without breaking the bank.

While you could put all of Southeast Asia on this list, Cambodia is one of my favorite countries in the region—it’s affordable, beautiful, and the locals are very hospitable. You can get a private, air-conditioned room for $25 USD, street food for $2-5 USD, and transportation across the country for $20-25 USD. If you’re spending around $50 USD a day, you’re living large.

Cambodia is cheaper than popular Thailand, but full of some of the most beautiful people in the world. Plus, it’s home to the incredible Angkor Wat (although it’s expensive to visit, well worth the cost!).

Cheap Places To Travel Around The Globe

The Balkans in Southeast Europe is the cheapest region in Europe. Composed of a handful of countries – many of which see very few tourists – this is an off-the-radar region that’s also very affordable and offers excellent value. While places like Dubrovnik have seen an influx of tourists (thanks to the cruise ships that dock there), much of the region is ripe for adventure travel. There’s cheap wine, great hiking and nature, stunning beaches, hearty food and wild nightlife. It is a top secret in Europe.

You can get by for as little as $30 USD a day – a fraction of what you’d pay in Western Europe. A week’s worth of groceries costs only $25 USD while a beer costs $2 USD.

And while the area was once notoriously unsafe, things have improved greatly over the past decade. There is a growing backpacking trail here and tourism is growing. This is the least explored area of Europe – but not for long so visit before the crowds and the price skyrocket.

China has fascinated travelers since Marco Polo traveled the Silk Road in 1275. While China’s dirt-cheap days are gone, the country remains a budget destination — and one of the cheapest in Asia — but with a caveat. You need to get out of big cities. Sure, cities are still a bargain. Hostels cost less than $20 USD, food is $2-5 USD per meal, and local transportation in cities is less than a dollar.

But, the country becomes even cheaper as you get off the beaten path and into the interior. This is where you’ll find the best travel deals and bargains! China is still one of the best value destinations in the world, and with its sheer size (it’s the 3rd largest country by land area), there’s a ton to see and do!

Always a cheap country, the Indian rupee is at a high of 39 rupees against the US dollar. Now, you get 78 rupees to the dollar – almost 50 percent more money to travel with. Unless you book five-star resorts and eat only Western meals, you’ll have a hard time spending $50 USD a day here. You can get around $30 USD by staying in cheap guesthouses, taking second-class trains and avoiding Western food. And if you want to splash out, you can live large for just $60 USD a day. Even iconic sights like the Taj Mahal – a wonder of the world – are very affordable (just $14 USD to enter).

India is a cheap backpacking destination with a rich cultural history, mouth-watering food, helpful and enthusiastic locals, amazing regional diversity, great tea and so much more to do. It’s a great place to explore in one big trip or in a few short chunks. Either way, don’t miss India.

Georgia has everything I want in a destination: it’s cheap, has delicious food and wine, offers amazing hikes and mountain views, and is free of huge crowds of tourists. I loved it immediately and wish I had visited sooner (when I did I extended my stay because I loved it so much!).

Top Five Destinations To Visit If You’re On A Budget

Tucked away in the Caucasus, Georgia has been at a cultural crossroads for centuries, but it’s not nearly as popular. Tbilisi is a city bustling with activity, while the rest of the country offers a rugged, off-the-beaten-path feel to adventurous adventures.

Budget travelers can get by here for next to nothing, with only $25 USD per day to spend. Beer is around $2 USD, a week’s worth of groceries is around $25-30 USD, and most museums and historic sites are only $2-3 USD.

Although it may seem out of the way, Georgia is one of the next big backpacking hubs. I would go back in a heartbeat!

Not all Euro countries are created equal and Portugal is one of the bargain countries in the region and one of my favorites. I fell in love with the country the first time I visited. With beautiful beaches, rolling wine country, stunning coastal cliffs, delicious food, fun locals and historic cities all at bargain prices, how could I not?

The Best Family Vacation Destinations For Spring

Portugal has become more popular and crowded in recent years (it has an increasingly expat and digital nomad scene) and Lisbon is more expensive as people move there and drive up prices. It is a great place after all! However, once you get outside of Lisbon, prices are still very cheap compared to the rest of Western Europe – and you’ll also see far fewer tourists. If you are a budget backpacker expect to get $45-60 USD per day.

Although very beautiful in summer, if you are looking for a cheap place to spend winter in Europe, Portugal is one of your best options.

Spent some time there. And I was blown away. Mexico City is a foodie’s paradise, Oaxaca has a lot of charm (and an endless flow of mezcal to boot!), and the Yucatan is perfect for road trips and cenote exploration. And because it’s so close to the US, it’s not only cheap (beer is only $1-2 USD, groceries are about $25 USD a week, and you can get by here for less than $50 USD a day) but it’s also cheap to get to. – Double win!

Although there are some areas that are not so safe to explore, you can enjoy the majority of the country. No matter what your interests are – beaches, dining, food, history, nature – there’s a corner of the country you can safely enjoy without breaking the bank.
