For most New Yorkers, walking around Midtown is more of a crowd-sourced nightmare than a dream, but the Dream Hotel’s original location is doing its best to combat that Manhattan stigma.
Conveniently located (for tourism and business travel) at 55th Street and Broadway, the hotel is just a ten-minute walk from most Broadway theaters and Theater District restaurants, as well as dazzlingly glitzy Times Square—but the aura of the dream is all downtown chic. . The first thing you notice in the hotel lobby—besides a line of people waiting for the elevator up to the hotel’s bar and lounge, PHD Terrace—is a floor-to-ceiling cylindrical fish tank teeming with saltwater fish that looked as if they had been harvested. From Finding Nemo. The walls and furniture throughout the hotel maintain a velvet green and purple color scheme, reminiscent of the colors of The Wizard of Oz on Speed. After a friendly check-in, you’ll be shown to your room, which is much larger than most bedrooms you’ll find in tiny New York apartments. Unburden and stare at the psychedelic-patterned canopy headboards as you sink into the comfy beds (bring earplugs: New York never sleeps, as they say), then freshen up to hit the spot.
At dinner at Serafina below, you’ll hear plenty of spoken Italian from both your dining guests and your waiters as you sip wine and devour delicious dishes like rich lobster ravioli, pizza and white wine branzino (get extra focaccia bread). For some well-crafted drinks, take a seat at Ricky, a cocktail bar with a lounge feel but with an upscale look (velvet green walls and vintage gold tables). And if you want to see and be seen, get in that elevator line and step onto the roof, where PHD Terrace keeps the party going on multiple floors late into the night with spinning DJs (and $17 cocktails).

If you never miss a morning workout, note that the hotel doesn’t have a gym, though hotel guests have free access to the nearby Crunch gym on W. 54th St. But you’ll likely be too busy running around town to need an extra cardio workout.
