Freehand New York is a good choice for budget-conscious travelers who want more serious style, comfort and personality. It feels more in-the-know than the similar concept offered at Ace Hotels.

I’ve seen a world of hotels like Hotel 50 Bowery, Hyatt Joie de Vivre boutique properties, and $115 a night in the winter is as low as $150, though $150 is probably a safe average.

It’s a great approach for guests who want to avoid the pain of crowded hotels and prefer a low-key approach, but with the style of a hip boutique spot.
Pros: The hip Ace brand reputation provides a cool factor with excellent on-site stores and restaurants that will keep you well-equipped throughout your stay.
Hudson River Hotel, New York (ny)
With outposts in Portland, Palm Springs, Seattle, and more, Ace Hotels has long established itself as a cool and affordable boutique offering. Rooms are minimal and small (keeping prices low) centered around common areas that invite guests to hang out and gather.
The New York location is equally hip with an industrial-meets-masculine decor. The lobby is buzzing with creative types camping out with laptops, and on-site food, drinks and shopping are all top-notch. Single, small or bunk-bed rooms offer cheaper rates. Never mind the small parts, the real show is happening outside the room anyway.
Rooms at the four-star Park South Hotel are straightforward but well-appointed in Manhattan’s super-central Nomad neighborhood. A member of Hotel World of Hyatt’s Joie de Vivre upscale portfolio, your stay will be comfortable and chic to the boutique line’s standards. Prices start around $150 in low season, making it one of the more reasonably priced, four-star properties on our list.
On-Site Amenities: Excellent cocktail bar, Black Tab Burger restaurant, small fitness center, rooftop bar with views of the Empire State Building.
New York City Luxury & 5 Star Hotels
Pros: The vintage-inspired style and decor is fun and photogenic, and the hotel’s bar is helmed by a pro-industry establishment.

The Gixby at Herald Square in Midtown Manhattan recently underwent an impressive remodel and both the guest rooms and public spaces benefited from the updated treatment. The place has a members-only club feel, and the rooms are quiet.

This wonderful corner of New York is full of incredible restaurants (don’t miss the authentic Polish food), fun bar scene, and boutique shopping.
The Roosevelt Hotel (manhattan)
Housed in a converted 19th-century warehouse, the hotel’s standard studio loft rooms are large and often start at $169 a night, with more space than you’ll find in Manhattan for the same price and a bright, modern eclectic vibe (a common trend on this side of the river).
There’s no on-site dining, but a complimentary shuttle takes guests anywhere within a mile of the hotel, and there are two 24-hour common terraces with great skyline views. There is a free laundry room to use, which is a good value, considering it’s a typical hotel fee.
