But whenever I talk about Mandarin Oriental Bangkok, I boldly say that it is one of the best luxury hotels in the world. After more than 10 years of traveling the planet and staying in some of the finest hotels and resorts, I can confidently say that the Mandarin Oriental in Bangkok truly stands above the rest.
Not with the flashiest, sleekest design and most technologically advanced amenities. This is none of them. It doesn’t have a fancy beach, it doesn’t have a rooftop pool, and it doesn’t have an infinity pool. But the hotel has history, heart and warmth that make every guest feel like real royalty.
Yes, of course, this is a five-star hotel located in one of the world’s greatest cities. But how a hotel makes you feel puts it in a category of its own. I absolutely love the Mandarin Oriental Bangkok, and anyone who has had the chance to stay at one of Bangkok’s top hotels will understand why Thailand is such a legend.

If I could convey the atmosphere of the Mandarin Oriental Bangkok restaurant in the Best of the World category, I would. But the way the rating system works doesn’t exactly crunch the numbers. However, it was very close to “Best Ever”.
Mandarin Oriental Bangkok is the city’s most historic hotel. I believe it may be the oldest hotel in Thailand. Travelers came from all over the world to stay at the Oriental Hotel. You can still see the historic hotel on site, where today there is an event space and lounge dedicated to famous people who have passed through the hotel over the decades. The history of the hotel is still alive and breathing and you feel like you are moving seamlessly between the past and the present. It’s such a beautiful place and it’s easy to see why it’s one of the best luxury hotels in the world.
The service was, in my opinion, the best I have ever experienced at a resort anywhere in the world. Thailand is known for its legendary hospitality, but Mandarin Oriental goes out of its way to not only make you feel welcome, but to make you feel like royalty, no matter who you are.
Best Luxury Hotels And Resorts In Bangkok
For example: David and I would not have stayed at a five-star resort during our three-month tourist trip in Thailand. Needless to say, we didn’t put together the right clothes for Mandarin Oriental resorts. However, no one made us feel like strangers during our stay here. I never felt stared at, I never felt small. I didn’t feel anything except that I was right there. To me, this is the epitome of world-class service and luxury, making it one of the best resorts in the world.
It’s technically a city hotel, but with lots of great restaurants, bars, terraces, a pool, spa, gym and river park, it feels like a resort. We enjoyed sitting on the veranda overlooking the Chao Phraya River and watching the action all day.
Mandarin Oriental Bangkok is also in one of the city’s best locations, close to Bangkok’s other top hotels, luxury shopping, historical sites and attractions. It’s a very safe area if you want to walk and explore.
The hotel has recently undergone one of the biggest renovations in its history, including the rooms. While the rooms still exude a historic atmosphere filled with art, artifacts, and period furniture, there’s plenty to bring this Bangkok hotel into the 21st century.
The Best Hotels In Bangkok
We stayed in the Jim Thompson Suite, one of the corner rooms overlooking Chao Phraya. It was an amazing space with a spacious bathroom, floor to ceiling windows, a large terrace and a comfortable plush bed.
I loved every meal I had at Mandarin Oriental Bangkok. On our first evening we ate Italian food by the river at Ciao Terrazza. It was an amazing meal with lobster linguine, juicy steak and delicious wine.
We had breakfast and lunch on the veranda. Most five-star resorts in Thailand have an impressive breakfast buffet with Western, Thai, Chinese and Japanese options. I love dim sum with eggs benedict for breakfast.
Our last night was a real treat when we got the chance to try Le Normandie with two Michelin stars from Alain Roux. If you know me, you know I can’t get enough of three hour long meals with perfect portions and service. But I feel special about Le Normandie because all of this food is divine.

Our sommelier, a French guy, actually spent his teenage years near my hometown in New York, so we had a lot to talk about between sips of the world’s best champagne.
The elegant dining room is decorated with plush sofas, exquisite floral arrangements, sparkling chandeliers and small tables overlooking the glittering skyline of Bangkok over the river. Gentlemen are required to wear a jacket, but if you don’t have one, the restaurant will provide one for you.
We sat down to a menu complete with wine. It was an exciting once-in-a-lifetime experience. And for those who don’t like to sit and eat for more than an hour, we closed the restaurant. If you eat anything from this dish, it should be the Challandais Roast Duck sliced table side.

Wellness is an important part of any Thai hotel stay. But health at Mandarin Oriental really deserves attention. The spa and gym is across the river from The Oriental Spa. Take one of the free riverboats to cross the river and reach the wellness complex in a minute. The gym is also here.
Where To Stay In Bangkok
We had a wonderful holistic wellness experience that included a romantic soak in our private spa suite, followed by a deep tissue massage mixed with a traditional Thai massage. The whole experience left us feeling soft, flexible and full of energy.
I also thought the gym was great with lots of space and lots of machines. Also, the gym has a soda fountain, for me to know.
