Although this includes Air Asia and Scoot, I have flown both carriers and they are not bad at all. Some services like food will have to be paid for, but otherwise, this is an excellent rental to have.

Hello, Bienvenue, Namaste, and welcome to my first trip report on this site! I am an Indian currently studying in the prestigious Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. I joined in 2018 and I will graduate this summer. The talk of the summer…

Cheap Flight Tickets To Australia From ₹ 19,172

Having never visited any of the countries west of India, I hope to visit Europe and the Middle East this summer, but before that, let me introduce you to this travelogue, which is much needed after the events of the last two years.

These months are brutal for the world and especially for travel and tourism. With all travel restrictions in place for the past two years, there was no way I could leave Singapore as my IndiGo flight touched down in the wee hours of 4th March 2020. By 21 months, my only communication was with my family. WhatsApp texts and calls and occasional video calls. As per the study, life slowly resumed around August 2020 and the world gradually returned to normalcy. My internship, which took place in the first half of 2021, was mostly on-site, with little travel involved, and for a while I hoped to return to my home country during the summer break after the internship.

Then, in April 2021… you know the details of the ‘second wave’. Millions of Indians infected with Covid-19, millions dead, scenes of despair and pleading, calls for oxygen, stories of utter and utter misery on the streets, bodies burnt or buried by trucks, among the worst in the world. Outbreaks in cases. My parents were also upset at first, but thankfully recovered quickly. Naturally, Singapore and many other countries closed their doors to Indians and barred people from many South Asian countries.

But the situation improved from June. Vaccination in India gained momentum, reaching the one billion dose mark in October. Cases declined and the country showed signs of recovery. Meanwhile, Singapore was aggressively rolling out its own vaccination plan, and by early August more than 80% of the eligible population (myself included) had received two shots of the vaccine. I was still hoping to go back sometime in December, but nothing was going to happen until Singapore lifted the ban on travelers from India. There was no option but to wait.

And then, on October 23rd (three months before the report of this trip was published) came news like manna from heaven…

Although the ban has now been lifted, India was still under Category 4 of Singapore’s restrictions, which required a ten-day SHN (stay-home notice) or ten-day quarantine at a dedicated facility, with no such option. Going out of doors throughout the period of quarantine. Fortunately, there was more to come…

Timeline of travel relaxation between India and Singapore October 23, 2021: Passengers traveling from India and several other South Asian countries were finally allowed to enter Singapore, but were still subject to Category 4 border measures, including 10 days of quarantine at a dedicated facility. November 8: On November 11, India was upgraded from category 4 to category 3 country and now 10 days quarantine can be done in hotels of travelers’ choice. November 15: India was not only upgraded from Category 3 to Category 2 by November 18, i.e. 7-day SHN, but also included in Singapore’s Vaccination Travel Lane (VTL) regime from November 29, applicable to Delhi, Mumbai and Selected flights from Chennai. The VTL scheme completely eliminates the need for quarantine, the only requirements are a pre-departure test and an on-arrival RT-PCR test and a set of other ART tests (of course, you are fully immunized, and fulfill other VTL requirements). . Note that VTL flights are only applicable to Singapore, not from Singapore. 42 40 weekly VTL flights operate from each of the three cities, with the following distribution, all of which are overnight flights: *  Delhi: Two flights daily, one each on Singapore Airlines (SQ403) and Air India (AI382). *Mumbai: One daily flight on Singapore Airlines (SQ423), 5x weekly flights on Vistara (UK105) and 2x weekly flights (Tue & Wed) on Air India (AI342, now scrapped) *Chennai: Singapore Airlines (SQ529) and IndiGo Two flights per day, one each on (6E51). Additionally, this paved the way for non-VTL flights from other Indian cities such as Bengaluru, Kolkata, Hyderabad and Ahmedabad, with Singapore Airlines and its subsidiary Scoot wasting no time in resuming flights to one of their largest markets. Air India (Express) and IndiGo also operate a handful of non-VTL flights.

The fact that India has jumped from ‘no entry’ category 4 to 3 to 2 and now to VTL in such a short span of time is nothing short of admirable. Since I live in Chennai, I was lucky enough to take a direct VTL flight from Chennai without connecting. In any case, the city is one of Singapore’s biggest Indian destinations in terms of traffic, so getting VTL services was a top priority for him.

The Onward Ticket Dilemma

Booking outbound (Singapore to Chennai) was a no-brainer decision: I booked as soon as it was announced on 23rd October. At that time (prior to November 29), Air India and Air India Express had a monopoly on flights to countries not included in India’s so-called ‘air bubble regime’ and international airlines were not allowed. There was no option but to book Air India to fly out on December 11. That date turned out to be lucky for me, as it was on December 9 that Singapore was removed from India’s ‘risk’ list, eliminating the need for an on-arrival RT-PCR test; My friends, who had reached India earlier, had to face the ordeal. Although SQ started flights from November 29, AI flight was well timed as it reached Chennai in the evening. That flight, however, is not the subject of this trip report; I hope to cover it at some point, my study commitments permitting!

To return, as soon as SQ started flights to India, I rushed to get a VTL ticket and in no time I had a ticket for the first-ever Singapore Airlines flight! Going with SQ was a no-brainer, as IndiGo was my usual choice pre-pandemic — ironically, SQ is now the cheapest option to fly from India to Singapore, while it was the most expensive pre-pandemic — and a very inferior offering.
