The Most Popular Tourist Destination – Despite the signs of a global economic slowdown, there seems to be no stop to tourism growth. For many people, traveling is an ideal way to experience new cultures, meet new people and broaden horizons. At the same time, tourism is a major component of the economy for many countries. Our new visualization takes a look at which countries are reaping the biggest benefits from tourism spending.
The visualization and trends are based on a report published by the UN World Tourism Organization. The map above shows the largest international tourism receipts (tourist expenditure) in 2018. Each country is proportional to the value of its tourism receipts. Countries that attract more tourism receipts (such as the United States and Spain) appear larger, while countries that have less tourism receipts (such as El Salvador) appear smaller. We have also coded the countries by region, as shown in the map legend. All monetary values are expressed in USD.
The Most Popular Tourist Destination
Popular tourist destinations are subject to change due to a variety of factors. In particular, media trends have increased to shape new attractive destinations for tourists. For example, the British city of Birmingham has seen a dramatic increase in tourism due to the popularity of the British drama “Peaky Blinders”, which takes place in the Midlands city. In addition, the political situation in a city can play a major role in its tourism performance, as shown by the negative effects that political protests have had on Hong Kong’s tourism industry. While developed countries in the West tend to have the highest tourism spending, developing countries like India also earn a larger share of tourism dollars. It remains to be seen how rapidly developing countries will reshape the tourism landscape in the future.

What’s on your travel bucket list? If you’re like most people, the more you travel, the more places you add to your bucket list. So, when the editors of the Big 7 Travel website announced the list of the top 50 bucket list destinations in the world, we stopped in our tracks and started checking the boxes.
The website studied its 1.5 million strong social audience to determine the best places in the world. According to Sarah Clayton-Lea, head of content with Big 7 Travel, this is the first time the site has put together this list. “Bucket list travel has been a trend that has come up time and time again in previous surveys when we asked our readers what type of travel content they most enjoyed consuming,” says Clayton-Lea. “So our curiosity got the best of us and we wanted to know what destinations people are dreaming of for 2019/2020.”
Map: The Top Tourist Attraction In Every Single Country
The results of the world’s top 50 bucket list destinations include some of the most beautiful places on earth. “White sandy beaches are still a must-see for many, with vibrant cities also making an appearance on many people’s bucket lists,” says Clayton-Lea. Countries with beautiful natural landscapes and world-famous landmarks were at the top: 22% of the destinations on the list have white sand beaches, while 52% are iconic cities.
In the study, Big 7 Travel found that people were even more likely to add a destination to their list if they had seen it on social media, and 33% of people searched for holiday destinations in the their Instagram feed. Instagram for travel inspiration, it makes sense that cities with colorful neighborhoods (like Cape Town’s Bo Kaap) made the cut,” says Clayton-Lea.
Bali topped the list of the 50 most popular bucket list destinations on earth, but there were also some unexpected choices. “The top 10 list has many of the expected dream destinations, but there are many surprises on the list: Paro Valley in Bhutan, for example, or Virunga National Park in the Congo,” says Clayton-Lea. “I think this shows a great appetite for the need to go off the grid and I can only assume that social media (and Netflix, in the case of Virunga!) is responsible for spreading the word about these amazing places.”
An interesting fact discovered in the study: Most people have an average bucket list of only 11 places, with the hope of visiting seven of those places during their lifetime. No matter how many places are on your bucket list, this ranking will have you dreaming of places near and far.
