Infants aged 6 to 11 months should also be vaccinated against hepatitis A. The dose does not count towards the routine 2-dose series.
Travelers allergic to a component of the vaccine or who are less than 6 months of age should receive a single dose of immunoglobulin, which provides effective protection for up to 2 months depending on the dose administered.
Unvaccinated travelers who are older than 40 years, immunocompromised, or have chronic illnesses who plan to travel to a risk area in less than 2 weeks should receive the initial dose of vaccine and receive immunoglobulin at the same appointment.
The CDC recommends that travelers to Mali take prescription medication to prevent malaria. Depending on the medication you take, you may need to start taking this medication a few days before your trip, as well as during and after your trip. Talk to your doctor about which anti-malaria medicine you should take.

Infants aged 6 to 11 months traveling abroad should receive 1 dose of measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine before travel. This dose does not count as part of the routine childhood vaccination series.
Recommended for travelers 2 months or older traveling to areas of Mali that are part of the meningitis belt during the dry season.
Rabid dogs are common in Mali. If you are bitten or scratched by a dog or other mammal while in Mali, there may be limited or no rabies treatment available.

Schistosomiasis, a parasitic infection that can spread in fresh water, occurs in Mali. Avoid swimming in fresh, unchlorinated water such as lakes, ponds, or rivers.
Most animals avoid humans, but may attack if they feel threatened, are defending their young or territory, or are injured or sick. Animal bites and scratches can lead to serious diseases such as rabies.
All animals can be a threat, but be extra careful with dogs, bats, monkeys, sea animals like jellyfish and snakes. If an animal bites or scratches you, immediately:

In some countries, medicines (prescription and non-prescription) may be substandard or counterfeit. Bring the medications you need from the United States so you don’t have to buy them at your destination.
Malaria is a risk in Mali. Fill your malaria prescription before you leave and bring enough for the duration of your trip. Follow your doctor’s instructions for taking the pills; some must be started before you leave.

It’s best to be prepared to prevent and treat common illnesses and injuries. Some supplies and medications may be difficult to find at your destination, may have different names, or may have different ingredients than you normally use.
If you feel unwell after traveling, you may need to see a doctor. If you need help finding a travel medicine specialist, see Find a clinic. Be sure to tell your doctor about your trip, including where you went and what you did during your trip. Also tell your doctor if an animal has bitten or scratched you during the trip.
If your doctor has prescribed antimalarial medicine for your trip, continue taking the rest of your pills after you return home. If you stop taking the medicine too soon, you can still get sick.

Malaria is always a serious disease and can be fatal. If you develop a fever, either while traveling to a malaria-risk area or after returning home (up to 1 year), you should seek medical attention immediately and tell them about your travel history.
