When you go on a beach vacation, your goal is usually comfort, not high fashion. Be sure to read the dress code wherever you plan to go, but then think about how you’ll spend your days.

When I take a warm weather vacation I literally live in a bathing suit during the day. I only wear “real clothes” to dinner and then to shows or other entertainment.
Moral of the story? You need less clothing than you think, so pack only the essentials!
Yes, you can wear shorts or pants or dresses more than once. No one notices and no one really cares.
For a weeklong beach vacation, I bring three swimsuits, a lifeguard (a must in Caribbean weather, especially if I plan to snorkel!), two hats, two t-shirts, a pair of shorts, and three sundresses.

That’s all. I cycle between them and if I spill on one cover there is another. I rarely wear my “real clothes” even though it’s silly to get dressed every day.
Use the same strategy for shoes. On the plane I wear tennis shoes, and then I bring a pair of flip-flops and another pair—sometimes two—of flat shoes that go with all my evening outfits.
Another tip? After checking where you want to stay and what you want to do there, decide whether you should pack my water shoes or not. Some beach locations or excursions require them, while others do not.
Be sure to also check out what amenities are available at the hotel. Do they have quality shampoo and conditioner so you can keep your shampoo at home? Awesome!

Do they have a hair dryer that meets your needs? Even if you go to a resort, do they provide beach towels? You’ve all been there.
Make sure you bring plenty of safe sunscreen for your beach adventures. And since they usually come in large bottles, did you know you can transfer them to TSA-approved travel bottles to avoid bag checks?

Your first reaction is “why?” I don’t blame you. That’s why most people don’t travel with pens, and if they do, it’s not always blue or black.

But… if you are traveling abroad, you will need to fill out a customs form. They provide forms on the plane, so you can fill them out whenever you want.
Sometimes flight attendants or your seatmates have pens, but not always. If you don’t have a pen, you have to fill it before customs, when everyone is following you and standing in line.
Don’t get stuck at the end of the line. Bring a blue or black pen and save yourself a headache.
I can’t tell you how many cases of these friends have bought after seeing me. It’s a slim case, but it holds my room key so I don’t have to carry my wallet or purse everywhere I go.

Many hotels have locks that only require your key to press – and most of them open when I touch the back of my phone to the lock. Any digging for a key makes me very happy.
I keep my driver’s license in there and credit card or cash as per my needs. The less I have to carry the better and safer.
The rear slides open easily and the case is also sturdy. I drop my phone all the time, but – knock on wood – I’ve never cracked the screen. Winner!
When you spend time in the sun, you should wear a hat and protect your face and ears. I have found my favorite sun hat. I’ve been using it since 2014 and it’s still going strong in 2022.

I can tie this hat and not worry about it crushing. It does not lose its shape when it gets wet. And it comes in all kinds of colors.
And my favorite feature? It rolls up when I’m not wearing it, so it doesn’t take up a ton of space in my beach bag or suitcase.
Oh, and did I mention it’s about $20? Just when I thought I lost it this summer, I had another one in my cart on Amazon in a heartbeat!

Not only do I love using a insulated water bottle on a cruise ship or at a resort for easy hydration when I’m out and about, but I also use it when traveling.
Keep your bottle empty and fill it at the drinking fountain after security. Many airports now have water bottle stations, which is great.
Don’t forget to wait for the flight attendant to arrive with the drink cart – you’re all set. This is one item that I know is often left off the beach vacation packing list, but you need it!
Pro tip: I use a wide mouth glass so I can pour a drink into it from the bar and take it to the pool or ocean and not worry about spilling it. But regardless, it keeps things warm. or cold.

Have you ever been on a beach vacation where they had no paper, or worse, almost no paper? Let’s just say it’s hard to enjoy a frozen drink.
My travel agent sent me a set of reusable travel straws that collapse for easy storage and have silicone tips so they feel good in your mouth.
On the last trip I went on, I bought a kit for everyone traveling so they would have extras for their families when they got home. They were equally loved.
They each have their own bristles and come with a cleaning brush so you can clean them in your spa bathroom. Some bartenders will wash it for you.
Travel Checklist — The Present Road
I love that they come in different colors so you know which straw belongs to which person. Needless to say, I will never travel again without this.
I carry a beach bag, which is basically a canvas bag with a zipper. It contains my daily stuff – sunscreen, books, sunglasses, etc.
But when I’m around water or sand, I like to wear a water-resistant cover that holds my towels and keeps everything from splashing. The last thing anyone wants is for something to go wrong.
Bonus? My big swimsuit fits waterproof in my suitcase so it doesn’t take up much space. It serves as an extra carry-on when I suddenly need extra stuff on my way back.

Another similar item I pack if I’m on a boat for some reason is a dry bag. It is completely waterproof and for some reason it floats if it falls on water.
Just make sure you seal it properly as an open bag won’t hold water for long and won’t float! I use the 20 liter size which holds beach towels, cameras and all the gear needed for a day on the water.
We all know TSA Rule 311, right? Liquids in your carry-on must be in a quart zip-top bag of 3.4 ounces or less and only one bag per passenger.
Even if you check your bags, you still have important things in your hands – a change of clothes, travel documents, medicine, etc. That means my hair products, sunscreen and more.
