Singapore To Include India And Indonesia In Vaccinated Travel Lane; Allows Quarantine Free Travel For Fully Vaccinated Travelers From Nov 29
Since Tuesday, the US has imposed restrictions on flights from India to US airports, which mainly affects Indian nationals.
This is part of an increasing global travel ban to and/or from India in the wake of the catastrophic rise of COVID-19, which is setting records for daily cases with 400,000 and more reported. And health officials believe the numbers are far too low.
The travel bans are intended to protect the rest of the world from a dangerous variant that has yet to be fully explored. Many health experts argue that travel bans are effective public health measures.
Prapagaran Vengadasalam is the first in his family to graduate, “the first to set foot abroad,” he says. The 29-year-old head of technology, who works for Infosys in the southern Indian city of Mysore, was due to leave for Canada for a year of service in late April. However, a week before the scheduled departure, Canada joined the list of countries that have banned flights from India.

“I wanted to help my parents rebuild our house and pay off our loans,” he says. “I was able to do it faster by taking part in projects abroad.”
Outside Canada, the list of travel bans is long: United Kingdom, Germany, Belgium, New Zealand, United Arab Emirates, Singapore, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Oman, Kuwait, Indonesia, Malawi, Maldives, Tanzania, Netherlands, Hong Kong, Thailand and Italy.
Perhaps the most severe restrictions apply to Australian citizens. More than 9,000 Australians living in and visiting India are unable to return home, including cricket players who have come to attend Indian Premier League matches. The Australian government threatened those who circumvented the ban with prison from 14 days to five years, a fine of $50,000 or both – but Prime Minister Scott Morrison later said it was “highly unlikely” that the maximum penalties would be imposed.
Stranded visitors post to a Facebook support group called “Australians stuck in India”, which has a growing community of 30,000 members. The group has become a place to seek advice, calm anxiety, and update travel information.

“We are deeply concerned for the well-being of family and friends,” said Radhika Sunderaj, one of the stranded Australians. She is an Indian national who returned last year to plan her son’s wedding (which was canceled due to the pandemic).
She had planned a trip home, but found out it had been canceled when the fare had been refunded to her credit card.
“I know many who have lost loved ones in India and are unable to reach them in their final moments or attend their funerals due to these crushing travel restrictions,” she says.
Unable to return to India, people are tweeting for help caring for sick family members at home.

Is there anyone on H1B who is in India to take care of a family member with Covid who cannot return immediately due to having to stamp a visa in their passport to re-enter the US? Please connect. “The heartache is great. I think it’s so ‘different’ and discriminatory,” says Sunderaj. “The UK had more cases of the variant than now in India, but UK travelers have never been banned in Australia, even when their cases peaked.”
In March, China said it would only allow travelers from India if they were vaccinated with the Chinese-made Sinovac vaccine, but that vaccine has not even been approved for use in India.
Nepal shares an open 1,100-mile border with India with 37 land entry points for vehicles. The government of Nepal closed only 22 of these points.
Revised Travel Guidelines For Travel To India
“The world is watching with concern the rising number of cases in India,” said Dr. Budhi Setiawan, UNICEF’s head of health in Nepal. “In Nepal, we share a porous border with India and we fear a spillover that could seriously strain our infrastructure and healthcare systems.”
The traffic on the India-Nepalese border consists mainly of migrant workers from Nepal who work in India, relief workers and tourists. Setiawan estimates that around 500,000 to 600,000 people will return to Nepal from India via overland entry points in the next few months.
Meanwhile, in Nepal, the number of cases increased from 100 a day in early April to 7,000 a day in May. Border closures are difficult to implement; India and Nepal have always had open borders, built on friendship and years of shared culture and bilateral trade.
Constant health monitoring would be more effective, Setiawan says. “We need to speed up testing and those who travel need to be more compliant with public health standards. There is an urgent need to mobilize additional healthcare workers, personal protective equipment and medical equipment. The very low level of vaccination in Nepal makes it even more likely that the virus will spiral out of control.”
Singapore Holds Back From Imposing Covid Restrictions On Travelers From China
And at least one royal guest has been affected. The former king of Nepal visited India for the Kumbh Mela festival and is believed to have caught the Indian variety there.
Sri Lanka may have the same health care concerns but keeps its borders open, with a limit on the number of Indians allowed into the country.
The island nation depends on tourism, which employs over 400,000 Sri Lankans. Hotels are open for business, including Indian tourists. The only requirement at some properties is a negative PCR test upon arrival from the airport and departure from the hotel.
One option is to quarantine in a room for two weeks before leaving the site. This was the path chosen by the famous author and historian William Dalrymple, whose Instagram post about his “great escape” from Sri Lanka’s infection-ridden Delhi air travel bubble sparked fury in India. (He later deleted it and apologized.)
Thailand Travel Restrictions 2023
As for U.S. policy, while nowhere is it as restrictive as some other countries, it is causing heartache for many Indians working temporarily in the United States by exempting students and journalists traveling from India. And it is likely to have far-reaching implications for American companies employing Indians.
The impact of the new travel restrictions will be felt by new and current H1B visa holders in India and their employers well into 2022.#H1B #IndiaTravelBan — The H1B Guy (@TheH1BGuy) April 30, 2021
The new petition asks to “allow non-immigrant visa holders stranded in India to return home” to the United States.
There is also a personal fee. Vijay Chidambaram, 33, is an assistant professor of computer science at the University of Texas at Austin. Chidambaram was looking forward to visiting his parents and in-laws in May. It’s been two years since his parents saw their only grandson, who is now 3 years old. “We had to cancel due to the COVID situation,” he says. “Everyone is sad about this, and it worries me a lot because my dad is a doctor who comes into contact with his patients on a daily basis. It’s scary to hear stories of people we know getting sick.”
Fly For Less To India
V. Raman Kutty, an epidemiologist and honorary chairman of noofit Health Action by People in Thrissur, Kerala, wonders if all of this could have been avoided.
If the global community had united to ensure that all countries had access to vaccines, perhaps the Indian variant would not have emerged. “It’s a fight we could have won,” he says.
An earlier version of the story reported that the Australian national cricket team was in India and unable to leave due to travel bans. Team members were traveling to India but were scheduled to play in teams consisting of various Indian and international players.Go directly to page content Go directly to page options Go directly to link A-Z Go directly to link A-Z Go directly to link A-Z
