Covid-19 raises many challenges and concerns. For parents and carers of school-age children (teenagers), everyday life is almost unrecognizable. We try to balance work, life and studies from home, we try to keep everyone happy. The benefits of physical activity for young people are well known, and in the time of COVID-19, moving more and sitting less is critical to helping families maintain physical and mental health. Being at home means that extracurricular activities, excursions, organized sports and outdoor games, young people who are used to PE school, have to find a “new normal”. Sedentary screen use has largely increased, perhaps due to a shift to online education, entertainment and childcare services for overburdened parents.

In this blog, we focus on why encouraging our children to move more and sit less (if they can) is a priority in these tough times. We intentionally focus on being within; Even if the instructions allow it, it is also useful to go outside.

Young people must accumulate at least 60 minutes of moderate intensity exercise per day; This can include lots of short-term physical activity and different intensities. During the week, activities should include musculoskeletal activities (such as yoga and jumping) and some that help develop motor skills (including balance, coordination and body awareness). These guidelines are based on evidence that more active youth have better health outcomes, including cardiovascular and bone health, muscle status, and weight status.[1] There is also evidence that increased physical activity is associated with improved mental health, cognitive function, aspects of self-esteem, and reduced symptoms of depression in youth.[2, 3] As in adults, every struggle has immediate benefits. the activity can reduce anxiety and have a well-being effect.[1]

Although there is limited evidence of the benefits of home activities for young people, any activity that gets your child moving is beneficial. Activity ideas include playing traditional playground games at home (such as hide and seek, tag, pass), dancing to music, and being creative (such as building an obstacle course, playing volleyball, making an action movie, or learning how to juggle). ). Check out age-appropriate web activity programs like The Body Coach. Yoga has many positive benefits for young people and anyone can do it at home. Try Cosmic Kids or The Yoga Crow. Some organizations offer ideas for activities at home (eg Active Schools, Change for Life and SportEngland). Try and rotate a few different activities to keep youngsters interested. Although 60 minutes a day is ideal, it is not always possible. Remember that it is a good choice to move more and sit less.

Physical activity (both regular and single sessions) can help improve cognitive function and attention in young people.[4, 5]  So short breaks in activity are great ways to break up screen time or activities. and it also helps them focus their work. Like the suggestions above, GoNoodle offers some short fun activities for elementary school students.

Combining physical activity with learning has cognitive benefits [6] and is particularly interesting for young children. Turn “Simon says” into a math game, “Simon says to jump 4+5 times”. Perform the movement (jumps, burpees, etc.) as many times as indicated on a pair of dice or a playing card. Count how many times you can hit the ball between you. Ask your child to spell the word and find the household items that start with each letter as quickly as possible. The possibilities are endless.

Sitting (especially using screens) is associated with poor physical and mental health in young adults.[7, 8]  If possible, periodically break up your sitting time with short, even sedentary activities. It will help the active game. the game.[9] In schools, young people are happier working for a short time than sitting.[10] Try creating a temporary table that the whole family can use.

Recent research provides guidelines for creating the best motivational environment to promote physical activity and well-being.[11-13] It is not rocket science to understand that young people are more motivated to engage in activities that are fun and engaging. Focus on the 3Cs of Competence, Control and Connection.

Ability; they encourage us to participate and enjoy the activities we can do. 1) Try to choose activities that are achievable but challenging for young people (if they are too easy, ask “

3) Encourage your child to set achievable goals and keep a log to track progress. We don’t know how important it is for young people to use wearables and apps to track physical activity, but if you have them, they can be a way to set goals and monitor your kids. Remember to be realistic about the circumstances; unrealistic goals are unattainable and demotivating.

Management; It’s about getting your child involved in decision-making and giving them choices. Let your children choose which activity (of four options) to do, when and with whom. Be creative and add variety (the links above will help). Try the “Responsible Kids” classes! If we show a reason for being active, the sense of control can increase (focus on immediate positive results – ‘

Connection; related to feeling supported and connected to others. For some young people this can be achieved by parents/carers being active with them, helping them feel competent and in control (see above). Being involved and having fun teaches positive behavior and focuses on family time. For some young people, connecting with friends through activities (such as online or over the phone) helps.

The 3Cs provide guidance, but parents or carers can’t follow 100%, and that’s okay. (https://selfdeterminationtheory.org/parenting/). Being kind to ourselves is especially important at this time. Most of us are nervous and emotional (as are our children). Sometimes the time isn’t right, so don’t force it. Please try again.

We hope this is helpful in helping our children stay active during this difficult time. We used the latest scientific evidence and our experience as parents. Stay safe and stay active as much as you can.
