What Are The Top 10 Tourist Destinations In The World

What Are The Top 10 Tourist Destinations In The World – The tourist season is in full swing, especially in wealthier parts of the Northern Hemisphere. Statistics recently released by the UNWTO World Tourism Barometer show that “International tourist arrivals reached 1,138 million in 2014, up 4.7% from the previous year.”

I mapped the geographic patterns of global tourism for the book ‘How to Land a Jumbo Jet’ published by Lonely Planet. The following cartogram shows the world’s countries sorted by international tourist arrivals, with the top 10 destinations labeled in Worldmapper-style colors (and listed at the bottom right corner):

The overall pattern of global tourist destinations has remained fairly stable over the past decade. Comparing the 2003 image displayed on Worldmapper with the above update, the major regions have hardly changed their global shares, even during periods when absolute revenues from tourism declined (such as the global recession in 2008). Since then). Quoting again from the World Tourism Barometer, the status of global tourism destinations in 2014 was as follows:

Europe (+4%), the most visited region with more than half of the world’s international tourists, saw an increase of 22 million arrivals in 2014, reaching a total of 588 million. Thanks to these results, tourism has been a major contributor to the European economic recovery. Growth was led by Northern Europe and Southern and Mediterranean Europe (both +7%), while results were more modest in Western Europe (+2%). Arrivals in Central and Eastern Europe stabilized (0%) after three years of strong growth.

International tourist arrivals in Asia and the Pacific grew (+5%) by 13 million to 263 million. The best performance was recorded in Northeast Asia and South Asia (both +7%). Arrivals increased by 6% in Oceania, while growth slowed in South-East Asia (+2%) compared to previous years.

The Americas was the best performing region with a 7% increase, welcoming an additional 13 million international tourists and raising the total to 181 million. Growth was driven by North America (+8%), where Mexico posted double-digit growth, and the Caribbean (+7%). Arrivals in Central America and South America grew at twice the rate recorded in 2013 (both +6%) and well above the world average.

International tourism (+4%) in the Middle East shows signs of a comeback with good results in most destinations. This sector attracted an additional 2 million arrivals, bringing the total to 50 million. International tourist arrivals to Africa increased by an estimated 2%, equivalent to an increase of one million arrivals. The sector reached 56 million tourists. While arrivals in North Africa were weak (+1%), sub-Saharan Africa saw a 3% increase in international tourist numbers despite outbreaks of Ebola virus disease in some West African countries. The data for Africa and the Middle East should be read with caution as it is based on limited and unstable data.

So when the editors of the website Big7 Travel announced their list of the world’s top 50 bucket list destinations, we stopped in our tracks and started checking boxes.

The website surveyed its 1.5 million-strong social audience to determine the best bucket list locations around the world. According to Sarah Clayton-Lee, content head at Big7 Travel, this is the first time the site has put together this list. “Bucket list travel was a trend that has been repeated repeatedly in previous surveys asking our readers what type of travel content they like to consume,” says Clayton-Lee. “So, our curiosity got the better of us and we wanted to know which destinations people are dreaming of for 2019/2020.”

The results for the top 50 bucket list destinations in the world include some of the most beautiful places on earth. “While white sandy beaches are still a must for many, vibrant cities also appear on many people’s bucket lists,” says Clayton-Lee. Countries with naturally beautiful scenery and world-famous landmarks came out on top: 22% of destinations on the list have white sandy beaches, while 52% are iconic cities.

The Business Of American Vacations

In the study, Big 7 Travel found that people were more likely to add a destination to their list if they saw it on social media, and 33% of people research vacation destinations on their Instagram feed. Instagramming for travel inspiration, says Clayton-Lee, it makes sense that cities with colorful neighborhoods (like Cape Town’s Bo Kaap) made the cut.

Bali topped the list of the 50 Most Popular Bucket List Destinations on Earth, but there were some unexpected picks, too. “The top 10 list has a lot of expected dream destinations, but there are some surprises on the list: Paro Valley in Bhutan, for example, or Virunga National Park in Congo,” says Clayton-Lee. “I think this shows a huge appetite for the need to go off the grid and can only assume that social media (and Netflix, in the case of Virunga!) is responsible for the promotion of these amazing places.”

An interesting fact the study uncovered: Most people have an average bucket list of just 11 places, with hopes of visiting seven of those places in their lifetime. No matter how many places are on your bucket list, this ranking will have you dreaming of places near and far.
