Therapeutic Recreation Activities For Adults

Therapeutic Recreation Activities For Adults – Using recreational therapy for addiction treatment is a healing method that combines several different activities such as exercise, yoga, art, horseback riding, hiking, and more. These hands-on activities are known to help increase physical and emotional health in patients seeking recovery from drug or alcohol addiction. When offered under the guidance of a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS), recreational therapy is a highly effective form of alternative treatment for substance addictions.

Almost anyone struggling with mental health, substance abuse or behavioral conditions can benefit from this type of therapy. However, recreational therapy is most effective when used in conjunction with an evidence-based treatment program that focuses on behavioral therapy, relapse prevention, and support group facilitation. These various types of therapeutic interventions are used to treat anger problems, grief, behavior problems, eating disorders, drug addiction, and alcoholism.

In general, the primary goal of recreational therapy is to help patients recognize and process the emotions they are struggling with. It can help individuals improve their physical, social, emotional, intellectual and spiritual lifestyles. At the same time, these activities can help build resilience and further assist individuals as they learn to overcome specific challenges related to addiction and recovery.

Although recreational therapy has become increasingly popular over the past 30 years, history shows that people used these therapies in the early 1900s. In 1984, the American Association for Therapeutic Recreation (ATRA) was developed to set the standards for recreational therapies. As a result of the formation of ATRA, recreation became increasingly popular in the coming years. In fact, the United States Department of Labor estimates that there are more than 19,000 recreational therapists in the United States.

Sometimes recreational therapy is called therapeutic recreation. This form of therapy makes use of activity-based interventions to meet the specific needs of individuals. However, because no two people are exactly alike, therapeutic recreation must be adjusted to meet each patient’s individual lifestyle needs and beliefs. Individualized treatment plans like these can help improve a person’s thought processes, decision making, and overall well-being.

This hands-on therapy approach aims to develop a person’s sense of independence and healthy living skills. As a result, recreational therapy can help reduce or even eliminate many symptoms associated with mental illness and/or addiction.

There are many different therapeutic recreational activities that therapists use to help address the emotions and symptoms that stand in the way of a patient’s recovery. By addressing specific challenges, patients can learn how to cope with things like depression, anxiety, trauma, grief, and cravings. Addressing each of these issues and more, recreational therapy offers many benefits when used in addiction treatment centers, such as:

When recreational therapy is used to treat substance addictions, it helps expose patients to new activities while providing a much-needed break from the intense emotional work done in therapy sessions. Often times, people who engage in therapeutic recreation don’t even realize they’re healing – they just feel like they’re participating in an activity. However, the truth is that therapeutic recreation can help break many destructive behavioral patterns that put people on the path of drug or alcohol addiction. Finally, recreational therapy offers a “whole patient” approach that focuses on healing the mind, body, and spirit.

Before starting an addiction treatment program, your therapist should work with you to develop a treatment plan that meets your specific needs. Because of this, your experience in rehab may seem different from someone else’s. At the same time, recreational therapy for addiction includes several different activities, some offered year-round, others seasonal. The four common types of therapy activities and drug and alcohol treatment facilities used are:

Adventure therapy is an umbrella term to describe recreational therapy that includes outdoor activities or physical activity. These activities can include canoeing, hiking, rock climbing, boating, fishing, rope courses, canoeing and more. Outdoor activities have proven effective in treating depression, anxiety, anger issues, trauma, and PTSD. They also encourage team building among participants while helping to develop motor skills and coordination. Ultimately, these benefits combine to support mental health and permanent recovery from alcohol and drug use.

Music, painting or drama therapy offers people the chance to express themselves in a free-spirited and creative way. Often times, it’s not easy to talk about difficult feelings, and many people are hesitant to discuss certain things. However, creative therapies such as arts and crafts provide patients with a creative tool to share memories, express emotions and gain self-awareness. In addition, creative activities are known to improve depression and anxiety by providing a relaxing and non-judgmental environment.

Therapeutic Recreation Major (bsr)

The most common form of animal assisted therapy is equine therapy. During equine treatment, patients will groom, feed, bridle, and complete other equine-related tasks. Patients develop communication skills and empathy by understanding body language and learning how to use it as a communication method. This type of therapeutic recreation is effective not only in the treatment of substance use disorders, but also in the treatment of related mental health issues, autism, dementia, and more.

Mindfulness is a proven relapse prevention technique. However, people in recovery do not always know how to practice mindfulness. Truth be told, there are many different ways to be mindful, and recreational therapy helps introduce a few of them to patients. These include journaling, creative writing, meditation, yoga, and more. Mindfulness exercises help slow the heart rate, lower blood pressure and release endorphins in the system. This helps to calm the mind, relieve racing thoughts, and reduce anxiety and depression.

CTRSs use the APIE treatment model (assess, plan, perform, evaluate). They assess their clients’ strengths and weaknesses and create individualized treatment plans and goals based on their individual needs and interests. They then plan and implement therapeutic activities to help their clients achieve their goals and improve functioning. CTRSs evaluate their clients’ progress and the effectiveness of their therapeutic interventions.

CTRSs are trained to practice several different leisure and activity methods. These include therapeutic arts and crafts, therapeutic music and dance, games, exercise, relaxation techniques, bibliotherapy, aromatherapy, gardening, adventure and memories; animal assisted therapy and the list goes on.

Therapeutic Recreation implements inclusive practices and uses adaptive tools and interventions to allow clients to participate in activities they were unable to do in the past. CTRSs encourage their clients to explore new and old interests to find what meets their needs and passions.
