“Lonely Planet writers and experts spend time on the road almost everywhere on the planet,” a Lonely Planet spokesperson explained in a prepared statement. “Each year they announce which destinations are slated to launch, offering travelers the best experience.”

Best In Travel 2018: Top 10 Countries

The outlet takes into account historical celebrations, major infrastructure changes, and environmental and economic factors that may affect potential tourist destinations each year.

“Destinations selected for Best in Travel meet certain criteria,” the spokesperson said. “Maybe there’s something special happening next year, or there’s been recent development and a lot of buzz about the place, offering travelers new things to see and do, or Lonely Planet’s team of experts think the place has been overlooked . and underrated, and invites travelers to visit before the crowds do.”

Canada is the #1 country to visit in 2017, according to Lonely Planet, because it’s “turning 150 in 2017, and we’re not apologizing for it.”

“Canada is always popular with us,” said Lonely Planet Canada Destinations Editor Alex Howard. “But there are a few things happening in 2017 that have made it number one. It’s the country’s biggest birthday in recent memory, next year will mark its sesquicentennial, and they won’t be shy about celebrating. Also, foreign travelers can expect their money to go farther because of the weak Canadian dollar, so now is the time to start planning a trip.”

“Canada is always popular with us,” Lonely Planet Canada Destinations Editor Alex Howard said in an email. “But there are some developments in 2017 that have made it number one. First, it’s the biggest birthday party in the country in a while, and next year will be the sesquicentennial, and they won’t be shy about celebrating. Also, international travelers may be waiting for their money to go further due to the weak Canadian dollar, so now is the time to start planning your trip.”

The second place is taken by Colombia, where the guide calls the South American country “the ultimate comeback child”. Finland, which celebrates 100 years of independence in 2017, came third. The Nordic country is hosting this year’s World Figure Skating Championships and the World Ski Championships, so get ready for mountain fun.

The United States didn’t make this year’s list after being named the third best destination in 2016, but the editors advise not to worry, as the list tries to highlight places that are particularly newsworthy. The guide draws on hundreds of their authors and experts to compile a comprehensive ranking that appreciates both popular and underrated or forgotten places.

Choquequirao, hidden in the deep valley of Apurimac, was the last refuge of the Incas from the conquistadors, and more and more travelers want to see it as soon as possible. The cable car will come to life in 2017 (or later; bureaucratic foot-dragging), bringing up to 3,000 visitors a day to the ruins in just 15 minutes. Visit it in the early days, or take a four-day trek in the footsteps of the Incas and experience Machu Picchu on your own. You’ll encounter only a couple of visitors – plus archaeologists who continue to excavate the jungle that still hides two-thirds of the impressive site.

It’s joked that most travelers who make it to Taranaki have just taken a wrong turn, with the statistic that only 2% of overseas visitors to New Zealand venture this way. But the new motto – A Little Out of Bounds – makes up for the region’s remoteness with a delightfully quirky new gallery dedicated to the effervescent kinetic artist, filmmaker, painter and poet Len Li. Meanwhile, in the nearby Egmont National Park, a wonderful hiking trail emerges from the shadows to challenge the Tangerir Alpine Pass as the best day walk in the country.

Mixing amazing nature and super cool Iberian culture, the Azores offer access from North America and Europe without the large number of travelers who have discovered Iceland in recent years. The “next Iceland” analogy goes beyond positioning the archipelago as an exciting pit stop across the pond. Its natural riches resemble many remarkable sights taken from elsewhere: majestic Hawaiian volcanoes, medieval Portuguese villages, bubbling Scandinavian hot springs, towering Irish cliffs and rugged Patagonian craters. But the secret won’t last long: tourism to the Azores has increased by 31% in the last 12 months, so visit this sweet spot in 2017 before things really kick off.

Located on the site of an aluminum smelter in the Conwy Valley, Surf Snowdonia is perhaps the most popular example of North Wales reimagining: the equipment of this inland lagoon produces the world’s longest man-made waves. Not to be outdone, Zip World at Penrhyn Quarry boasts the world’s fastest (and Europe’s longest) zip line. The same people run Bounce Below: giant trampolines strung up in caves below Blaenau Ffestiniog, once the capital of Wales’ shale industry. To top it off, Snowdonia National Park – the largest in Wales – has been recognized as a ‘dark sky reserve’ due to its lack of light pollution. The climate may be hot, but South Australia offers the coolest combination of sparkling wine country, bountiful produce festivals, vibrant and stunning stretches of the picturesque Australian outback and uncrowded beaches that would be the envy of even the Bahamas. Queen Mary 2 is putting South Australia on her 2017 travel bucket list, opting not only to dock in its artsy capital of Adelaide, but also to take in the rustic charms of Kangaroo Island. There’s only one road into the Aisen region of Chilean Patagonia, and if you follow its dirt tracks from start to finish, you’ll experience a kaleidoscopic journey where misty fjords give way to brooding rainforests, bone-dry pampas and azure lagoons. Shaped by the forces of the Patagonian Ice Field – the third largest reservoir of fresh water on Earth – Aisen is an extreme, ever-changing landscape. But with fresh glacier routes, a booming craft beer scene in remote villages and a huge new nature reserve
